Hello all,

Been lurking about on and off for a couple months, now I'm ready to get some help.

Going to propose around End of Dec - Early Jan (exact date isn't set in stone yet).


Round or Princess (haven't decided yet, trying to get this info out of her)
Leaning towards Round
Looking for 1ct diamond (has to be at least 1.0, I know my girl ;) )
Ideal Cut
Color doesn't matter as much (I-J is ok as long as it's not clearly yellow tinted)
Just has to be eye clean (SI2 or better)

Budget $5-6k (can stretch a bit if its worth it, but also cheaper is fine as well as long as it's quality)

Will probably be set in a solitaire white gold ring so that we can go back and make it into the forever ring together.

I put these into the search and there's quite a few that show up.. I just don't really know where to go from there.

I have a question about princess cuts. I kind of know what I'm looking for in a round, but are they the same when looking at a princess?

What should I be looking for in a princess that might differ from a round?

So I went today to the B&M store here in San Diego (David & Sons in UTC Mall if anyone knows about them) and talked with one of the owners. Went over a few rounds and I asked about some cushions. Decided that princesses weren't really doing it for me so now I'm deciding between these two.

RB's are more expensive and honestly both looked great in the lights and sparkled well. I have heard that AVCs (from GoodOldGold) are the way to go though if I'm in the market for a cushion. My dilemma is that I purchased an $800 necklace from David&Sons which I am using as credit towards the engagement ring.

Is the AVC worth forgoing the credit? $800 is still quite a lot of money to me (about to go into medical school....) but I can make it work out if AVCs will wow me. Unfortunately, I can't look at AVCs in person (unless other vendors sell AVCs?). I'm looking for good optics mostly, above all else (I can still go down to SI2 clarity (eye clean) and I color).

$7000 is my absolute max for ring + setting (will probably be a temporary solitary so we can go back later and make it into a forever) and would really, really like it 1.0+ carat. However, if there's a 0.9+ that will save me considerable money, I'd be interested in that.

you could use the 800 towards a setting and purchase the diamond online? AVCs are vintage style cushions with great optics but there are also modern style cushions with great optics as well. what do you think your GF would prefer? Did you see any rounds that you liked? I think with your budget you can get a nice round diamond.

I forgot to mention that this particular jeweler uses the Rap report for all pricing, i.e. a 1.0 SI2 I Round is exactly $5600. Since he is the owner, he doesn't have to work up the commission, etc. He told me that all of his diamonds are ideal cut. They don't buy anything else and everything is graded by either GIA or EGL USA. He even went so far to tell me that he doesn't trust EGL besides EGL USA, so I feel like I can trust his opinion.

On the pricing though, he did express that he would do his best to get a stone that I love within my budget, which I took to be saying that he's willing to give me a discount if somethings just outside my budget.

I will be going back tomorrow afternoon to look at a few more (didn't have much time today) but just wanted to get some opinions here.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I didn't think about using the 800 towards a setting by itself. As for what my GF prefers, she's all over the place. I don't think I can use her opinion on the shape of the diamond because she basically doesn't know what she wants (and trust me, she's looking in person, online, in magazines... no definite winner). She asked me what I thought and I said round brilliant, and she was like ya i want what u want...... thanks babe, that helps a lot!

He spent some time showing me different rounds all within 1.0-1.1 and showed me things like color variance, and asked if I could see inclusions on an SI2 vs an SI3. I didn't find one in particular that I loved yet.
