Hi all,
This is a little long so if you don''t want to read the whole thing, skip to the section in bold to see my final question. I am mostly a lurker, but I lurk enough that my husband has taken to calling Pricesope "diamond ****." I need some expertise on a diamond I recently acquired. First, a little background. My quest for a new diamond started two years ago when we were approaching our 10 year anniversary. After much searching I had decided to wait until I had a bigger budget. While looking in a local B&M store for a smaller piece of jewelry to mark the occasion (earrings, necklace, etc.) the jeweler brought out a loose cushion cut stone. It was an uncerted, 2.01 carat for 6K. It had a ton of inclusions but none were black and they were widely scattered. I decided to purchase the stone and it was set with trillions on each side, platinum setting. I had it sent to GIA and the cert came back as an G I-2. Also, it faced up more like a 1.7 than a 2 carat.
Fast forward a year. I became less satisfied as time went on. Other people could not easily see the inclusions but that is the first place my eye went when I looked at my ring. I was also unhappy with the ratio of the trillions to the cushion. The setting wasn''t as well executed as I would have liked. All my time on PS has made me so particular! I decided I''d rather have a smaller, round stone that was better cut and more brilliant than the crushed ice look of this particular cushion. So, I traded my ring back to the jeweler. I had a trade in value of 8K to work with. Because of issues that I won''t get into right now, the jeweler really needed me to choose something he had in his store already. I ended up with two rings. A beautiful 5 stone ring, 1.25 shared prong setting which he made for me and a fancy cut stone that appears round in its setting, which is a round halo similar to the Ritani endless love.
Here is my question. The new stone is also uncerted and it''s absolutely beautiful (1.03 carats). The jeweler said the salesperson he bought it from referred to it as a Venus cut? It looks like a round brilliant but upon close inspection has ten sides. I will try and post some pictures asap, though it''s hard to see the shape now that it''s set. I actually chose it more for how sparkly and white it is so I wasn''t concerned about focusing on the shape when I chose the setting.
After doing a little research, I finally found some info online about the Venus cut. Kristall Diamonds in Russia has a diamond cut called "Happy" and they had a video of it on their website. It has 81 facets and 10 sides. Kristall apparently had an agreement with Reed''s Jewelers a few years ago whereby Reed''s sold this shape diamond under the brand Venus. According to Kristall''s website, all of their diamonds are laser inscribed on the girdle. The girdle is not visible in my current setting so I am not sure if it is inscribed. I looked on Reed''s website and they no longer sell Venus cut diamonds. In fact, there was VERY little info anywhere to be found online aside from what I mentioned above. I''m not sure how this diamond ended up with the rep who sold it to the jeweler here.
Has anyone ever heard of a Venus cut stone made by Kristall or sold at Reed''s Jewelers? This whole process was kind of a pain, and I''m happy with the way my rings look, just curious if there is a cert floating around out there for this diamond. I''ve also thought of sending it to be certified myself. I e-mailed Kristall to try and find info but haven''t heard from them yet. My feeling is that maybe this sales rep acquired this stone when Reed''s stopped selling them and somehow the certification was lost along the way.
Hindsight is 20/20 and if I had to do it all again I would not have gone this route to get my diamond but I am where I am. We own two businesses in our community and try our best to support other local businesses because this economy here is our livelihood. Any insight on this kind of stone is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
