Hi everyone,

Need your expert opinion - I have been looking into diamonds for some time now and am nearing the purchase date.

I am looking for a minimum of 2.0 carats - budget is 20-25k US. I am a Canadian buyer and will be making the trip down there for the purchase. Round diamond for the lady.

So far; this is what I'm considering:

- 2.02ct I VS1: GIA – excellent cut and polish, very good symmetry - $24,200.00
- 2.01ct G SI2: GIA – excellent cut, polish and symmetry, a great SI2 - $21,255.75.

I just can't seem to decide between the Color and the Clarity negotiation! I am pretty adamant about it being an excellent cut as per my research (feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken).

Should I stick to the "G-H" color and compromise on clarity? Or should I go down to I and get a VS1 or VVS2?

PLEASE HELP!

If thse 2 I favor the I-VS1. SI2's at that size often aren't eye-clean. But I'd keep looking for an eye-clean stone with at least 3X GIA if not AGS 0.

I'm not sure you can make a call like that without seeing the stones in person. There are probably a handful of SI2's out there in that size that are eye clean. Also, your definition of eye clean and someone else's may be different. Where are you planning to come to purchase the stone? If it's NYC, I'd reach out to ID Jewelry (Yekutiel) and Chris at ERD and see what they come up with. Discuss with them in detail what your definition of eye clean is...

Good luck!

Compare this stone to the I color stone you linked:

2.07ct, I, SI1 (confirmed eye clean)
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11297/

It is the same size (actually, a touch larger), same color, and just as eye-clean as your stone (confirmed by GOG). It's about $5k less expensive than the stone that you had linked. Spend that extra $ on a top-quality setting and you're out the door for less than the price of the stone you had mentioned.

Here are a few nice options, all under budget, from the same well-respected vendor:

2.5ct, K, VS2

2.2ct, I, SI1

Take a look at these two. I literally just bought a diamond from them and they are GREAT to work with.

Thank you for your responses; very quick and I am appreciative of that.

@yennyfire: Thank you for those recommendations. How do I get in touch with them? I am looking to buy in the next 3 months.

@Andelain: When you say 3XGIA or AG0, what does that mean? Sorry I'm not too familiar with diamond shopping - only got as far as the 4 C's and florescence.

@RockyRacoon: This retailer seems reputable - do you know anyone personally there which you can recommend? For security, the retailer I am currently talking to is willing to ship the diamond to GIA; have them laser inscribe it with the serial number & re-evaluate it, with the diamond shipping directly from the GIA facilities to my address of choice. This ensures that the diamond I am receiving is sent from GIA labs, inscribed, along with the full report.

@H8q: Something about buying a diamond online is making me feel a bit uneasy (see above).

Thank you once again!

You can speak with Jonathan, who runs Good Old Gold. He goes by Rhino on the Pricescope boards. Talk to Jon and get his take on the situation. Many folks here have purchased from GOG, and if you search, you can read about their experiences!

I do like the choices that were recommended and all of the vendors (ID Jewelry, ERD, Whiteflash and Good Old Gold) are reputable.
