Hi,

I just discovered this forum today. I''m looking at engagement rings. I''ve tried to educate myself as much as possible in the last week, and every sales person I talk to seems to know less than myself. So I thought I''d come to ask some experts

Here are the two diamonds I''ve looked at so far...

#1: Canadian Round 1.03 weight, SI1, H (GIA Cert) - Spence Diamonds
Diam: 6.35-6.43 mm
Depth: 4.03 mm
Crown A 37
Pavil. 44.3%
Table 61.6%
cut G (?good?)
Culet very small
girdle: thick to sl. thick

Price: $9555 CAD, using 0.8201 (today''s conversion), is $7836 USD
I used the HCA - and it came out to 5.8, which I was quite disappointed with... seeing as how the "salesperson" said it was at least a Grade II cut.

#2: Canadian Round 1.00 weight, VS2, G (EGL Cert) - Independent Jewellers
Dimen: 6.33-6.25x4.01mm
Depth 63.70%
Table 59%
Pavil 43.7%
Crown 15.60%
no specs on culet, girdle

Price: $9900 CAD, probably about $8150 USD.
HCA 4.8.

My problem is that no one can tell me intelligently about how good the cut is on a diamond, and I only have so much time to learn about a profession that obviously takes years and years of experience. I have to say I like the look of the 2nd diamond more. My concerns are about the EGL cert, and the fact that the 2nd diamond seems better on most specs, and really doesn''t cost much more than the first.

Also, now that I''ve discovered HCA on this site, I now distrust both stores (supposed to be "leading sellers" in my city - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) as the first stone is supposed to be "ideal" and the second is "good". So now I''m seriously considering buying online.

Sorry to ramble to much, but I didn''t want to bother people with multiple posts. I''m a novice, and any help is very much appreciated! Thank you so much in advance.

#1 is carrying too much weight in the girdle, try to find one that is closer to 61% total depth, pavil near 43% depth with a diameter near 6.5 mm for a 1 ct....#2 at 63.7% that's deeper than the grand canyon.plus the stones way over price check with vendor's here on PS...these may be your vendor's ideal cuts but is nowere near ags ideal cuts.

Thanks for the reply... I figured these two diamonds weren't so hot.

Can anyone give me their opinion on GemScan in Canada? I've had one jeweller tell me it should be called "GemScaM" and one gemologist say that it is second only to AGS strictness for cut.

Thanks for the help...

Top Flop,

I'm no expert -- but I can tell you that you have come to the right place for invaluable information on diamond-buying. Read the tutorials here on PS - there is a wealth of information there. And when you look at/shop for diamonds, insist on getting ALL the measurements... you can't tell for sure about the cut of a stone (the MOST important "C") without the crown and pavilion angles.
