We just purchased my engagement ring today and feel a little overwhelmed. The ring details are as follows:

weight: 1.23ct
shape and cut: round brilliant
measurements: 6.86-6.82 x 4.25mm
depth: 62.2%
table: 56%
crown: 15.5%
pavilion: 42.9%
girdle: sl thick faceted
cutlet: none
polish: very good
symmetry: good
clarity: SI2
color: F
fluorescence: none
price: $6,170
lab: EGL

I would love to hear some feedback to reassure our decision. Thanks!

Cut proportion seems good, but the EGL lab not so good, could be lower than what is stated as EGL is considered a less consistent lab in color and clarity grading than GIA/AGS, depending on which lab the report comes from.

Get it independently appraised if you are worried.

well i''m not one of the experts, but it sounds lovely! it scores well on the hca, so i am sure you did good! and what a nice size. what do you love best about it?

The diamond looks beautiful and I like the size and that fact that it was a "F" colorless. Only real concerns are the clarity and EGL cert.

Is the price for the stone and a setting or just the stone?

EGL is known to be a softer grading lab for color and clarity. AGS or GIA might come up with lower color and clarity grades.

But if you are happy with your purchase then enjoy the moment.

price was for the stone alone.

It sounds beautiful. The stone in my avatar is EGL, and it is a great stone. If you have seen it with your eyes and love it, and it has a good score on the HCA, that''s the most important thing. If you would like extra reassurance, then you could get the diamond independently appraised by a professional independent appraiser.

Can you post some pictures?

unfortunately I don''t have it yet and s/b ready for pickup on Weds. They needed to re-size the band for me. I can post pics once I receive it.

Many have pointed out that EGL may grade softer in color, but if you liked the color when you bought it, I would not worry. There are lots of folks who have EGL stones and love them.

Even if it ended up a GIA "G" or "H", you are probably in good shape - such stones are pretty colorless to the eye for most of us. I went from an "F" to "G" and frankly can''t tell the difference in its setting. As to clarity, if you didn''t notice anything when you picked it, you are probably okay. My guess is that going up in color or clarity is going to cost you more, so I wouldn''t stress it.

I got an AGS G Si2 for the same price, and it was a branded H&A. Given that your diamond is EGL and therefore could be a few color grades lower and clarity grades lower if sent to AGS, and is not a branded H&A (or is it?) I suspect you overpaid.

If you bought at a jeweler with a store front there is always a mark up though, so it could be a fair price for the type of vendor.

Okay, now I think I found another diamond that I may prefer over the we purchased today. It''s description is as follows:

weight: 1.24
measurements: 6.87-6.90 x 4.28
depth: 62.2%
table: 55%
crown: 15.5%
pavilion: 43%
girdle: med to slightly thick
cutlet: none
polish: excellent
symmetry: excellent
clarity: SI2
color: F
fluorescence: none
cert: GIA
price: $5,997

additional inscription states H&A

Thoughts?

no brainer !!! i''ll take the GIA stone.

I''d take the GIA as well...

+1

Do you have the report number for the GIA diamond or the crown and pavilion angles from the report and the star and lower girdle facet percentages please? Also what are the grade setting inclusions noted on the clarity plot such as feather, twinning wisps etc?

The GIA report number 6117103286. There is a small crystal and a couple of small clouds. I called this morning to get more info on the diamond and they will call back tomorrow with additional details since the vault is locked during the weekend (Blue Nile). I''m not sure if its eye clean. Now I''m wondering if I should take back my purchase from yesterday and just keeping hunting (purchase is from the Shane Co).

do a search on the forum for Shane & Co, and read feedback.

Thank you, here is the link to the report;

The diamond has excellent proportions, my main concern is with the grade setting clouds as in SI grades they can sometimes impact performance. See if your BN rep can find out if the clouds are having a negative effect on the diamond and it is eyeclean, if you decide to buy this diamond it could be a good idea to get an independant appraiser to inspect the stone concerning these clouds during the return period.

Thanks for the feedback! I''ve become obsessed with this process...LOL I''m taking a break to watch my Vikings play against the Cowboys but soon as the game is over I''m back to searching!

I do have a question in regards to fluorescence...how concern should I be with this rating?

The fluorescence is rated as none so no concerns at all. Rarely strong or very strong blue can cause a stone to look cloudy in some lights but this is unusual.

Here is a link from the advanced tutorial which explains further - Fluorescence.

Also I just wanted to mention, it states the stone is h&a, well we have no way of knowing if it has the cutting precision a ' true' h&a stone requires without images and those won't be forthcoming if it is a BN diamond. If you aren't concerned with having a h&a diamond with perfect hearts and arrows then thats fine but if it does matter to you, it might be better to select a branded h&a which has images to show the overall cutting precision.

So in my search should I be concern with "faint" ratings?

Not at all, you would probably never even know it is there. It is usually medium blue and above that might have a visible effect on the stone, actually some of us here are fans of fluorescence!

Thanks again! It really helps to have a neutral party''s opinion!

Very glad to help!

Can anyone tell me what it means when looking at GIA reports and it states "surface graining is not shown"? Is this a bad thing?

Surface graining " not shown" means that it is unlikely to be an issue and is just mentioned for the sake of completeness, its not normally of concern.

This page has images of various inclusions which includes surface graining and more info concerning it.

Update: I''ve returned my purchase with Shane Co. (even though it never left their building), axed the Blue Nile diamond, and actually think I found the one. It''s from Whiteflash.com and details are as follows:

Item Code: AGS-1040389740014

. Report: AGS
. Shape: Whiteflash ACA
. Carat: 1.252
. Depth %: 61.2
. Table %: 55.4
. Crown Angle: 34.9
. Crown %: 15.4
. Star : 53
. Pavilion Angle: 40.8
. Pavilion %: 43.1
. Lower Girdle %: 77
. Girdle: Thin to Medium Faceted
. Measurements: 6.97-6.99X4.27
. Light Performance: 0
. Polish: Ideal
. Symmetry: Ideal
. Culet: Pointed
. Fluorescence: Negligible

It''s more money but it seems like a much better diamond and scored 1.1 on HCA. I was told that its eye-clean. I love some feedback on this diamond. Thanks!

Boomboom aka worry wart...lol

Looks good!
