Hi everyone,
I am shopping for an MRB at a B&M for a friend and need a quick lesson on the best combos for crown and pavilion angles. What do you prefer and why? I will only see GIA certs and online purchasing is not an option. I know I prefer chunkier arrows and am comfortable with dealing with inclusions since we will be seeing all the stones IRL.
TIA. I really appreciate the help.

The cheat sheet is:
Table 54-58
Depth no more than 62.2
Crown 34-35
Pavilion 40.6 - 40.9

Pair 34 ca with 40.9 pa
Pair 34.5 ca with 40.8 pa - this is my new stone and my fav. Good balance and larger arrows although there are other combos that others probably prefer.
Pair 35 ca with 40.8 pa
Pair 34.3 ca with 40.8 pa

Some combos that folks prefer listed about but the cheat sheet gives some overall guidelines. Do you have a hearts and arrows viewer or idealscope with you?

I am sure you know the orthodox ideal ranges TB 54-58, CA 34-35, PA 40.6-40.9
I will consider TB upto 60%, as long as I get 60% depth for a big spread, and CA and PA stay within the ideal range.
I will consider 35.5/40.6 or even 36.0/40.6
What I won't take is a shallow/steep combo such as 33.5/41 and 33.0/41.2
I just do not like the appearance of a stone with flat crown and steep PA.

That's just me. Having that said, it also depends on the price and carat range I am shopping. I am less fussy with cut quality when I look at 2.0c+ stones.

Then you should look for a stone with pav depth b/t 75-76%.

Table % and PA also affect the appearance of the arrows. As you increase TB and PA, the table reflection gets bigger and your arrows get shorter.
Stay under 58% for TB and 40.8% for PA. Consider Lower Half % of 75%.
OP, if you are shopping at a B&M, assessing the shape and size of the arrows is actually easy.

Same table, Same Lower Half (GIA rounds to the nearest 5%). Completely different appearance for the arrows, mainly because of the PAs.

Some other options,
34/41 55t-56t 78-80lgf is a great combo
35/40.6 with a table under 58.
for a 60-60 around 34-34.5 crown with a pavilion at or under 41 is a good choice.

you can use the hca on a phone or the hca app is available for phones.
Carrying an ASET is another option, they are easy to use with a little practice.

Thank you cut @MissGotRocks, @flyingpig, @Dancing Fire, @Karl_K . We saw some stones today, just to get a feel for size and color, and the hunt is on. I will start a separate thread with a more defined parameters and a request for assistance with specific stones.

The parameters that Karl is describing can be quite nice. I've even seen 33.5/41 that are gorgeous.

Just be sure to check prices here before she buys, because it's likely she could do better through vendors here, not to mention having a much wider selection.

Hi everyone,
I am shopping for an MRB at a B&M for a friend ,,,,,, I know I prefer chunkier arrows and am comfortable with dealing with inclusions since we will be seeing all the stones IRL.
The question isn't if you prefer chunkier arrows, but what the friend prefers.
I would point both out to them and let them decide which they like better if possible.

edit: I have rewriten this 5 times and it still reads kinda snarky but I mean it in the nicest possible way, not snarky.

Of course she will buy what she wants, but I will tell her my opinion anyway.

For chunkier arrows, you want to stay with shorter lower pavilion mains. when you get to the 79 - 80% or greater range, you are getting thinner arrows.
