I was wondering if anyone had an opinion about these Asscher cut diamonds......are these quality diamonds and are they worth the money? Any better than others? These are loose diamonds from a jeweler close to my hometown. I''m sure I will have some more to post later as this is all a bit confusing for me. I don''t want to buy a bad diamond! I have been reading up on a lot of diamond buying tips. I would appreciate any feedback! Thanks!

hey angel! welcome to ps
35.gif

have you compared these diamonds side by side? these cuts could all look very different in their design and patterning.

Yes, how did they look to you???

Thanks! Glad to be here! I have not seen them yet, I didn''t really want to go the online route so I finally found a place that sells loose diamonds near me. We are most likely going Saturday to look. I was mainly wondering if judging by the information, if these were actually good quality diamonds and if they were worth the price. I know that I will have to go and see them and compare, just trying to get an idea I guess of what to look for. I may reconsider going to this jeweler if the measurements don''t really fit the prices. Any tips on what to look for? I read that an asscher cut depth percentage runs a little deep but a good % shouldn''t be over 70, is this correct? I am most concerned about the cut.

The numbers are a guideline, you really have to see them to judge them. Hopefully Storm can help you with the numbers, he is our resident expert on asschers. He helped me pick out mine. It''s .92 E VS1 and I got it online from www.goodoldgold.com . I highly recommend them.

Thanks!

I will let you know what I find on Saturday!

Well I e-mailed them on the ones that I found that I was interested in. I think they may send me some pictures before I go see them on Saturday so maybe I can post them beforehand.

Oh that would be great, we need those pics in order to help you.

My advice? Listen to Kaleigh. Have you seen her bling?!?!

She knows her stones!!!

Trust me, I will. That is some serious BLING!

Okay another quick question, do I need to be concerned about crown angles and pavilion depth in an asscher cut diamond? I want to make sure I know everything I need to know before I go in there!

unless the jeweler has a sarin machine and is willing to run all of the stones for you, you won''t be able to get those numbers anyway.
the most important thing will be performance of the stone and whether or not one will have a pattern that is pleasing to you. if both of those things fall into place, you may have your diamond saturday.

Hopefully I will have it on Saturday, that would be great! The guy at the jewelry store called me just a bit ago and I told him what I was looking for and he is going to have some to my specifications at the store when we go there. I will let you know what happens!

This thread will tell you what to look for in patterns:

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/all-about-asschers.24689/

If you get some pictures we will be able to help you more.

As far as crown heing goes look at the diamond from the side and if the crown looks deep it should be good. Check for fire in direct light also.
A good asscher should show kicken patterns in difused light and a ton of fire in direct light.
Also rock the diamonds back and forth they should put on an awesome light show if they are well cut. By the numbers the first is better than the second but with asschers the numbers dont tell much.

Thanks for the tips, they will help. I also went to the thread you posted and it helped too.

I''m telling you Storm knows his asschers. He could write a book on them!!! Get us those pics before Saturday if you can.

That he does. I will do my best to get some pics for you guys. I did find out that the store manager is a certified gemologist, this is good right? Or do most stores always have one? The guy told me I would most likely be dealing with the manager on Saturday.

Hi Angel,
Your two stones present an intersting comparison.
Of course all the regulars gave you great advice- look at the diamond and see if it pleases you!

But the differences in these two diamonds also include the fact that one has an EGL report, while the other has a GIA report.
The prices actually reflect this, as the J colored GIA stone is priced within a reasonable range, while the H would look quite inexpensive if you compared it to other H color diamonds of 1.10 - if they also had a GIA report.

Anyway- the prices seem reasonable, and if you like either one, I don''t think the report makes such a huge difference in this size/price diamond.
Get whichever one you love the most.
What kind of ring will you be putting it into?

Hi David, Thanks for the reply. I really just want a solitare so will most likely just get a white gold band. I wanted something very simple. What setting is best for asschers? Any thoughts?

Do you like a simple bezel or do you prefer prongs??? I could see you doing a simple bezel, very thin and thus highlighting the stone. It''s all a matter of personal preference.

What is the difference? LOL I have spent so much time trying to learn what makes a quality diamond, I haven''t even begun to look at settings!! I heard somewhere that a bezel setting makes a diamond appear larger?

Another quick question, is how many points a diamond has important. Guy from store was telling me about one he had, said something about 89 points. Is that good or something? Help!

You need to dig up my last thread for my asscher. It was called, Look Nan has her hand on my asscher. My ring has more bling than you may want, but there is a thin bezel around the stone and then a halo. I sware my stone at .92 was small, but the bezel did magic for it. It''s porbably on page 2 on SMTR forum. Take a look, it may help you.

good choices Kaleigh- Prongs of bezel.
The advantages of bezel would seem to be that it protects the stone better - plus stylistically- I've seem some bezel settings for Asschers that were truly breathtaking.
The minus side is that you actually hide quite a bit more of the diamond as compared to prong setting- so these is less light getting into/out of your diamond.
As far as security- actually, I'd say prongs are the most secure method in most cases.

if you go with prongs, nice double tips on the corners accentuate the "Asscher-ness" of the diamond.

angel, I just bumped my thread for you. HTH.

Points????

Maybe he was talking a diamond with 89 facets??
Angel- it''s incredible what some people will say about diamonds....

If a diamond weighs .08., it''s referred to as "An 8 pointer"
.80 would be "An Eighty Pointer"

Kaleigh- That''s the first time I''ve seen you ring- WOW! It''s drop dead gorgeous!

In a ring made like that one, the bezel is every bit as good as prongs- if not better!

That ring is gorgeous Kaleigh!!!!! I have seen that setting before and I really love it. It really makes the ring look a lot bigger. That is probably the only type of bezel setting I would like, I found a few others but would have to see a lot more to make a decision. Now I am torn between yours and prongs only! I do like the idea of the double prongs David, thanks.

He may have said an ''eighty nine pointer'' I may have gotten it wrong. He must have been just trying to confuse me! Sneaky devil.

You guys are great, I really appreciate all the comments you have made so far!!!

Oh PS-what type of wedding band could you possibly have with that type of bezel setting kaleigh, if any? It seems like it would be difficult to find one that would fit together with it.
