Rascal,
I will be keeping my fingers and toes crossed and knocking on wood for you guys tomorrow. Good luck and please let us know how it goes!!!

Well, I went to the jeweler''s today.

Of course my jeweler couldn''t see the slant for about twenty minutes. But I kept insisting it was there, and even my fiance noted that if he could see it, then it was obvious. But those darn jewelry store lights make looking for these problems hard. In the end, he didn''t admit it was slanted, but offered to have his benchman "polish" down the channels to try and even it out. I just kept saying that if he didn''t see it, how was he planning on fixing it?

Then I showed him the messy channel, and well, he didn''t say much. Just that the ring is "handmade" and I should expect imperfections. First of all, it isn''t handmade. Maybe "finished" by hand, but it certainly was not handmade. But I kept saying that the ring was much better before his repair and why should I have to live with the channel being less than what it was before the repair??

He kept telling me that these aren''t "problems" and I should stop referring to them as "problems." Well, they are problems, to me at least. At one point I became a bit angry and told him bluntly that I find his quality control to be less than spectacular, and he told me that all of his jewelry is of great quality. So then I asked him why I was allowed in the very first place to walk out of the store with an uneven channel and poorly finished prongs? He didn''t really have an answer.

I also brought to his attention my concern about the prongs, and nicely told him that while they were in fact secure, if I was going to get everything off my chest, I wanted him to see the prongs. I even showed him a picture of Kayla''s rings because I had a close up picture of her prongs and how nicely rounded they were. He proceeded to tell me that if I wanted rounded prongs, I should have told him! What? All I want is nicely finished prongs!! I don''t care if they are square, round, pointed, ANYTHING! Just finish them well! So he said that he could re-set the diamond if I wanted, but that the prongs were finished to the same standards as Tiffany''s, etc. Well I have seen Tiffany''s prongs, and they don''t have the flat, pressed down metal at the tips. And like I said earlier, this really doesn''t bother me to the point of my wanting to pull out of my hair (like the other problems do), but hell, since I''m having all these problems, I wanted to get everything off my chest.

Well, basically, after about an hour of looking and talking and me crying a bit (I was just so angry, upset, annoyed, frustrated...), he offered to either repair all the problems or get me a new setting. My FI and I went outside and talked for a while, and we decided that I just can''t trust that the repairs will be done so that everything is fixed to my expectations. I mean, if you tell me that you can''t see the problem, how are you going to fix it? So we decided to let him get in some similar settings, and we will look at those. I also asked for him to bring in some "simplier" settings that I won''t have such problems with, i.e. pears on the sides or tapered bullets on the sides. Of course, there was no mention of price, and I swear, my FI and I are not paying another cent. So I just hope he doesn''t say, well you paid $2000 and all these settings are $3000. Because honestly, I may lose it.

He will call when he gets the settings in. I will be able to look at them all and make sure that if I pick one, that particular one has no problems at all. And then he will reset my stone that same day. And worst case senario, if he wants more $$ or if the settings are just not what I want, then I will at least have him fix the prongs and the channel. I really don''t want him repairing the "slant" if he can''t see what he is repairing.

Argh, sorry for the long post!!!

I can relate to frustration in the area of e-rings all too well and I know how much it sucks. I am glad that they are letting you choose a new setting because I agree that the repairs would almost certainly not be up the your standards. I'm sure you will find one you love (and eagle-eye it prior to the setting of your diamond) and then you can let this go. I am exactly like you are, pointing out things that I know others think are ridiculous. My fiance always says he pities the jeweler/waiter/dry cleaner etc that gets my business. I'm not mean or unfair. I just like things a certain way. Don't compromise, your new ring will be great!

Oh my goodness, Ideal Rock!!

I agree go for the new setting and don't even think about letting them fix this one. Seems as though they don't have a handle what they would be fixing anyway. Go for a simple setting without the channel setting. I hope they bring in some really pretty ones and that you find one that you love.
