Just got off the phone with a sales rep. from Harry winston regarding the cushion cut pave engagement ring.

Need opinion on which I should get.

1.21 carot, F, VS1, $23,000

1.22, E, VVS1, $25,000

I''m wondering if there''s a big difference between the two in terms of whatever I diamond should do. sorry a newbie to the diamond information. any thoughts would be much appreciated. I plan on buying this in the next week. Thanks again.

It would be best to see which one looks better. But assuming they are equal in beauty, then take the F VS1. Are you set on HW? Because you could have a ring custom made in the same quality for around half those prices, probably...or get a larger center stone.

What happened here? Didn''t you write in about this before, when you found the HW piece in Las Vegas? I thought you decided that they were overpriced - which they are, quite terribly. Are you really going to pay this much for the ring - you could get almost twice the size - what''s so great about these?

Wow! Those are awefully expensive!

Personally, I wouldn''t want a $25,000 ring that was only 1.2 cts! Actually, I would be irritated if my fiance or husband wasted good carat money like that!!

Do you realise you could get at least 2cts in a custom design and maybe even have a few bucks left over by leaving out the HW name??

If you must pick between the two, save $3,000 and go for the VS1.

if they both look the same, i'd take the F VS1. I doubt you see much of a color difference b/t the two. if there's a way to view them both side by side and then choose which is most pleasing, that's the direction I'd take.

Is that for the stone AND the pave setting? Or, just the stone?

If you want to compare these rings then you should get the GIA or AGS certs and give the cut information to the PSers to look at. At these prices I assume perfect cuts, but one never knows! Then you can get most information from this board.

I looked at a Tiffany stone, smaller than mine, one color lower, worse cut too - for the price I could get mine plus a new Camry.

So, best to check the certs they have before you decide on these stones.

Side note: In the Tiffany I was looking at it was like this: 2.09 G/VS1, 58 table, 62.4 depth, EX symm, VG polish. Price = $45,600. June 2006 - Yikes!!

I assume that if you are buying in Harry Winston, then money shouldn''t be a big constraint. If that is the case, with $2000 more, I would take the E color and VVS1. At least the stone accompanies a cert that states an excellent color and almost flawless clarity. Technically, F/VS1 are three grades off than E/VVS1 (1 color grade and 2 clarity grades). Visually, there might not be any differences between the two stones but so is a diamond from HW or generic store. If you are going for the name of Harry Winston, at least go for the best stuff.

In another thread, he was talking about financing the ring. Apparently money is an object so I wouldn''t be looking at HW. You can get the same specs for half the cost, no financing needed and no one will know whether it is a HW or not. JMHO!!

I agree. I''d buy elsewhere and be able to pocket all the extra change. Having it custom-made would still be thousands cheaper.

Whoa, Al, you are all over the place!! It is September. In another post you said you would not have $11K saved up until December. In another thread you said you were going to buy in February or March of next year and asked about discounts. Harry Winston will not negotiate a price with you - what is your rush? Wait until you have the money and then purchase - there will be plenty of diamonds left!

Even if you just wait until you have the $11K, that can buy you a beautiful diamond! Even larger (as you are already looking at high color/clarity) and for less than $11K! You just finished college - believe me that there will be many unexpected expenses coming up in life - you are safer buying what you can afford paying cash for (and $11K just out of college is an excellent savings to be able to spend!) Buying Harry Winston unfortunately does not mean that she will not decide she wants another setting or another stone in 3 years, so you cannot count on that. Please - buy only what you can afford at the time you decide to actually propose!

I wholeheartedly ditto this and agree with the others - buy what you can afford! Do you feel pressure from your fiance or friends to spend a certain amount?

Thanks for everyone''s input. I agree with everyone that I couldve gotten a larger stone but i didn''t want to go through the hassle of finding the stone then finding a jeweler to make the ring, guarantee, etc, etc. So I ended up getting the 1.22 E VVS1 ring. I know it was pretty pricey but my gf loved it and i think it looks great too. as for how i financed it i liquidiated some of my stock holdings and paid the rest in cash. i got a pretty substantial discount from the salesperson as well - who knew. i was planning on saving a portion of my monthly pay to get the ring but i decided that would take to long.

not sure if you guys saw this thread a while back but another PSer got the same ring, https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/loving-my-harry-winston-cushion-pave-ering.42461/=.

What kind of discount were you able to negotiate - please provide some additional information? Who did you deal with?

he said before that he was still saving for it... boy, I''m a huge fan of quality but definitely not interested in tattooing a little triangle on the butt of my diamond and saying GUESS how much I paid for this?!

Oh flashback to high school, the big rage for everyone was to have Guess? jeans with the zippers at the ankle and the triangle logo on the back pocket. I remember demanding my mom spend $60 on those jeans over and again and now as long as the quality is good I''m *so* over brand names... so triangle on the butt... get it? hehe

Yes, congratulations to you and gf. You did propose didn''t you? Please post pictures when you get the chance.

sorry I meant that she tried in on in vegas. its actually being made right now so should get it in the next 4-6 weeks. will propose then. will post pictures when i get it. thanks

That''s great, albert! It is a beautiful ring and I do recall someone saying that HW will discount rings sometime. Please post pictures when it comes!

Congrats! I''m sure it will be beautiful!

Congratulations to you and your gf. She is one lucky girl. Not everyone is willing to liquidate some of the assets to give her the ring that she loves. Happiness and memorable moments are something that money cannot buy. I am sure you did good.
