My sister and her husband are going to Australia for 2 weeks, and she is interested in shopping for a pendant (slide) that has a combination of opals, diamond accents and tanzanite. Any reputable and reasonable jewelry stores to recommend? They are going to be traveling through many states, so any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Thanks, I was hoping to get more names, but I am sure that Garry's staff will be very helpful.

Hi Robbe
I spoke to Christian at Precious Metals last week and he mentioned Gary was going on a buying trip for about a month.

While there are many dealers Opals are a very complicated gemstone and unfortunately there are lots of shonky operators here.

I would feel much more comfortable if your people started with a reputable company like Gary’s

Hope they enjoy their trip, Lets us know how it went when they return.
Regards
Johan

I am a consumer and have read pricescope and previously diamondtalk. I have read Gary's (CutNut's)posts on both newsboards and he has been posting for years. I feel that you would be getting the genuine thing if you bought from his store.

For some reason tanzanite (or other blue stones) is often paired with black opal... so you may not face serious shortage of designs with such stones.

Regardless of where you buy opal from, it is a very good idea to look at lots of stones first and get familiar with what top quality should look like. I have no idea, of course, whether you already have experience with different opal qualities, but havid a good 'benchmark' in mind is something I always found helpful even if I would not be shopping for the best and/or most expensive types...

Just a thought, of course.

For example, these were obviously not the best material, but such strong personality ! Opal is very good at making such pieces possible.

Thanks guys & gals. I have read a fair amount (and looked at quite a few) on opals, so I would be quite comfortable in choosing a quality opal. However, my sister is as newbie as they get (even thinks that the light tanzanites are nice). I hope she takes my advice and calls Garry, but I don't know...she is so much into the 'moment' and getting a bargain, that she usually gets what she pays for! Hopefully, she won't get taken too badly, LOL.

Or call me in Whistler, Canada, at the ski lodge with Leonid. But between us the only phone line is plugged into one or the other lap top the whole time
