1.22ct EGL, sn inscribed round diamond
VS2 H
$5337
6.86-6.80 x 4.19mm

Total Depth: 61.3%
Table Width: 58%
Crown Height: 14%
Pavilion Depth: 43%
Girdle Thickness: Medium, Faceted

Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None

Thoughts?

Scrib,

Without the crown and pavilion angles it will be impossible to give you any truly significant input. The H color and the VS2 clarity are very good, but without the angle #'s, it is impossible to determine the cut; and it is the cut that ultimately determines the beauty of a stone. Can your vendor provide you with those numbers?

Have you seen the diamond?

Lynn

Are the %s I provided not good enough???

I'll see if I can get the angle #s.

I have not seen the diamond.

Hi Scrib-

I don't know if angles or %s are more precise, but the #s you provided churn out a nice 1.0 X/X/X/VG on the HCA. Perhaps you can get an IdealScope image or something like it? (this will tell you if there's any unreasonable light leakage). Numbers aren't everything, but if you're working with a vendor you trust who can give you photos and info you request, it sounds OK to me. I should add, however, that I am NOT an expert!!!

Good luck!

Scrib,
I did put your numbers into the HCA; results were great. See below:

Selected: 61.3% depth, 58% table, 14% crown, 43% pavilion, 0% culet
The result is for a symmetrical diamond with a medium girdle and very good polish

Factor/Grade
Light Return/Excellent
Fire/Excellent
Scintillation/Excellent
Spread or diameter for weight/Very Good
Total Visual Performance 1 - Excellent
within TIC range

"A score below 2 (Excellent) means you have eliminated known poor performers (more than 95% of all diamonds). Your own personal preference may be for a diamond with an HCA score of 1.5 more rather than one with a lower score of say 0.5."

But I also know that the angle #'s are the most reliable. Once you get those, it would be interesting to see what the score is then.

The HCA is very helpful, but should be considered as a screening tool.

The guy doesn't have any angle numbers for me. Only the cert and I listed everything from it. Even on the cert it says "EXCELLENT IDEAL CUT. The quality of the cut of this diamond achieves Excellent in symmetry and proportions, thus obtaining the optimal dispersion of light and brilliance."

I ran it through the HCA myself, prior to posting. But I wanted to get valued, HUMAN input. :D

Thanks!

It sounds like a very nice diamond. I would try to get an idealscope picture, and make sure there is enough timein the return policy to get an appraisel done, since EGL is sometime "soft" in their color and clarity grading. You can plug you criteria into the PS search engine an dsee how this price compares to comparable stones. EGL stones are often slightly discounted compared to GIA or AGS, so if it checks out, it might be a good deal.

The percentages, even if they are not accurate because they are rounded to the nearest whole % (es. 55.4% is listed as 55% and 44.7% as 45%), suggest a very nice looking diamond. The first thing I'd check with this diamond is the accuracy of color/clarity grades; the data you have posted suggests and EGL Israel graded diamond... If you do a search you'll see that we do not have a great opinion of them and their grading is often inaccurate and lenient. I'd definitely make the sale contingent upon a satisfactory appraisal -- in this way you'll be sure to be getting what you are paying for.

The jeweler said the stone came from NY and was graded in the states.

Well, I bought it. Seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up. It'll be a nice upgrade for my wife, as her original engagement ring was stolen recently by the moving company.

The jeweler has an unconditional return policy. In the end, it'll work out and my wife will hopefully be able to forget this horrible nightmare. Going from a .92 round to a 1.22 round may help.

How do you run a diamond through HCA?

There is a link at the bottom of the screen (Holloway Cut Adviser). Just type in your numbers and GO!
