Hi there, I''ve been lurking for a long time on this site, and know that you all have some great expertise and advice. So here goes: My fiance worked very hard to pick out a beautiful, very high quality 2.05c round stone for me. I absolutely love the stone. He had it set in a platinum channel-set (0.5c) basket-type setting (very low profile). On my very small hands (ring size 4)it looks a bit chunky and almost masculine. Also, because the band is so thick, I feel that it detracts from the center stone. I tend to have minimalist taste and would have preferred something a bit more delicate-looking. Anyway, now it is time to shop for wedding bands. He suggested another identical channel-set band, but honestly, the two bands together would be so thick and bulky that I think the center stone would be completely lost. So I''m fishing for suggestions on either: 1) Wedding bands that would go with this ring without adding too much additional thickness (but still a bit o''sparkle), or 2) Ideas for how to reset my actual engagement ring in a way that would make it look more delicate/emphasize the center stone more, and then ideas for a coordinating, if not matching, wedding band. One thought I had is that we could potentially use the existing smal diamonds from the channel setting - 10 total...and put them instead into a prong setting. Is this even possible? Would it even be much thinner/more delicate?

If I were you I would get a simple, thin standard Tiffany setting for your e-ring, and use the 10 diamonds to make a half eternity band to wear as your wedding band. That way you can wear them together, or wear them separately and have 2 beautiful rings!

Have you seen the "eye candy" folder for examples?

I agree with researcher. I think a simple solitare -- either the knife edge or a rounded thin band would be beautiful with a 10 stone, shared prong or very thin channel set wedding band. THe issue you will face is how high to set the stone. Too low may mean that the band doesn't sit flush to the e-ring. Higer may be more flash than you want. You can probably experiment with some real pieces with a jeweler to find what is right for you.

That is a good idea...the tiffany style solitares are beautiful. However, do you have any ideas if I still want a little sparkle in the engagement ring itself? What alternatives are there to a channel-set style that will still give me that gleam, without the thickness and bulkiness?

Is pave an option?

Thanks so much for all your help. I apologize for my ignorance.

You could always see if they can do a shared prong setting for your e-ring. Without all that extra metal, it would be MUCH thinner. Other options would be getting a wrap to wear with your e-ring so you would have the option of wearing your ring with the sidestones or without, or just trading your setting in for one with pave set diamonds (there's a thread on etoile rings in which I've posted a few examples). Does this help?

I would not consider pave the best idea for a thin band. How about this ring (Like THIS)

Wow, thanks guys! I do like the idea of the prong setting. It's delicate, but still sparkly. And very unique! One more question for you. How do you think it would look if I had my 2.05c center stone set in a thin prong-set band (say, with 2 point stones), and then reset my 10 5 point stones from the orginal channel setting into a prong-set wedding band? Would it look funny to have the wedding band be a tad thicker than the actual e-ring? (But still thinner than it is now, obviously?) I guess, put more succinctly, from an aesthetic standpoint do you think it is important that the thickness of the two bands be the same? Thanks again for all your wisdom. You guys rock.

It's better to see for yourself... all this is just a matter of taste, really. And something tells me THIS online collection would help

The Precision Set link that Valeria101 suppied really will give you a better idea of sets. I personally think it's fine to have your wedding band wider than the e-ring, but you really will need to decide for yourself. One thing to keep in mind is the shank of your e-ring will need to be thick enough that it can hold up your stone/the head of the ring without bending etc. I ran into this problem when I wanted the shared prong band for my e-ring (I have a 3.22 ct princess). So, just make sure that it's a sturdy enough design with enough platinum that you won't have to worry about your ring snagging on things and getting bent out of shape.
