Hi guys, I want to see if anyone has an idea what kind of gem this is. It was bought in the 1970s in Russia. Inscriptions are in Russian on the back of the ring.
there's almost no way for us to ID a gem based on photos alone. But IMHO the setting looks like sterling, and the gem is fairly large and very clean so I am guessing it's synthetic. Obviously not entirely sure, but that's my first thought.
From the hallmarks photo I see the soviet era mark for silver. Since it is a silver ring it is likely the stone is a synthetic. From my googling I noticed a lot of Soviet era jewelry used synthetic gems. The setting is really beautiful. As Lovedogs said, we really can't identify a gem from a photo. Have fun learning about your new rings
Is it pink or purple? You wrote that it is purple but it looks a bit pinkish on my monitor.
Approximate mm size?
Eye clean? Loupe clean?
Any facet wear and tear?
At first glance, I would hazard a guess that it is a synthetic stone based on the setting, size, colour, clarity, and time line.
