Hi, I am new to the forum and was hoping that I could get some help with some diamonds. I have been reading up on the 4 c's, certifications and ideal proportions. Currently I am looking at 3 diamonds, 2 of which are Forevermark diamonds.

All three diamonds are round diamonds. These diamonds would be for a solitaire diamond setting.

The first diamond is IGI certified. From searching the web and talking to some jewellers, it sounds like IGI is not as stringent as GIA. The IGI cert is dated from 2004, is that an issue? The IGI cert has the following specs:

Natural Diamond
Round Brilliant
1.02 ct
Measurement: 6.57 - 6.63 x 3.95mm
VS 2
G color
Polish and Symmetry: Excellent
Proportions: Excellent
Table Diameter: 58%
Crown Height: 14%
Pavilion Depth: 44%
Girdle Thickness: Thin to Medium (FAC.)
Culet Size: Pointed

Comments: Hearts & Arrows, "Ideal Cut"

The two Forevermarks are as follows:

Forevermark Diamond #1:

1.07ct
Color: E
Fluorescence: Negligable
SI1
Grade: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Table width: 55.2%
Crown Height: 15.6%
Pavilion Depth: 43.1%
Girdle Thickness 2%

Forevermark Diamond #2:

1.00ct
Color: G
Fluorescence: Faint
VS2
Grade: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Table width: 57%
Crown Height: 15.1%
Pavilion Depth: 43.4%
Girdle Thickness 1.9%

The IGI certified diamond and the Forevermark Diamond #2 are about the same price, and the Forevermark Diamond #1 is slightly more expensive ($500). Any comments would be welcome!

First rule out the IGI certed stone. Such reports are not worth much in helping determine value, other than to basically guarantee you will be overpaying!

I am not familiar with the Forevermark brand. What are the prices on those two diamonds? Do they come with lab reports from a reputable source? If Stone 3 is priced like an IGI stone then I am not optimistic that Forevermark is a desirable and appropriately priced brand. I am concerned you are over paying/

What are the depths on Stones 2 and 3?

Just going by the specs I'd like stone #1...is the stone graded by GIA? how much $$$ ?

You didn't put the depth for any of them....The measurements of the first one don't look that great...can you get ideal scope images on these? I wouldn't necessarily rule out the IGI...I'm sure it's priced better, but more information, or links would be good. I'd be interested in knowing more about the last two diamonds.

The measurements for Forevermark diamond #1 (1.07ct) is 6.50-6.54 x 4.08mm. The other diamond is 6.37-6.43 x3.98mm.

I am not ordering these online, and Forevermark is a De Beers brand so there is markup. The 1.07ct is 11k and the 1ct is 10.5k. I am sure that I could get something much cheaper but I am not too sure about ordering online.

The problem with the Forevermarks is that they are graded by their own lab, so there is potential for the report to be biased.

I could try to get an ideal scope picture.

I'd eliminate the 3rd one, the 1.00 G.

The prices are pretty expensive. You can get a branded H&A/Signature ideal cut from an Internet retailer for less.

For the first diamond (the IGI certified diamond), how would I calculate the depth %? Would it just be 3.95 divided by the average of 6.57 and 6.63? I am trying to utilize the HCA tool. Also, should I be concerned that the cert date was back in 2004?

Yes that is a good way to estimate depth %.

Those prices are high. And the IGI report is not reliable so you are likely overpaying for that relative to what you would pay for an accurately graded GIA stone of similar weight.

Can you work with a jeweler willing to call in GIA or AGS graded stones? This advice is not about being pedantically attached to a report. It is about getting the best value for your money.

Is there a reason as to why the 1.00 G should not be considered?
