I've read the technical definitions of brilliance and fire on various sites but I think I need it explained to me in laymens terms because my mind still thinks they're the same thing. Does anyone have an easy way to explain the difference? Which is more important or is it a goal to have a good balance of both? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You might get more reactions in the Rocky Talky section.
There is a short definition in the 'knowledge' section (on top of the page, next to 'forums' etc) -> glossary.
It's quite clearly described there and hopefully some experienced PSers chime in and pethaps they can even illustrate with photo's.

In my mind... brilliance = black and white brightness and contrast. Fire = color

Brilliance is what you see outside on an overcast day and your diamond looks like a pure white beacon of light. It is brightness in the stone.

Fire is colored rainbows going POW POW and is usually seen when you are in pot lighting and sometimes in bright sunlight outside if you put your back to the sun and look at your diamond. You can also see spectral color, but not POW POW fire, in diffuse natural light, like under a leafy green tree.

Scintillation is the patterning of black and white that moves around the face of the diamond. It is the life in a diamond, and can be seen in most lighting when you move you hand around.

All are important to maximizing the beauty of a diamond, and are all evident only to the extent that a diamond is well cut.

You're so right! It didn't occur to me that I'm in the wrong section. Thank you!

Wow - great explanations! That helps a lot - I didn't even think about scintillation! Thank you so much.
