What in the 4 C's should we sacrifice for a 10k diamond?
Would like to get something around 1 ct.
Please advise.. thanks heaps.

Any of them can be scaraficed based upon what your requirements are. Some want the largest best cut diamond so they scraafice on clarity and color. What are your preferences? I would think that 10k for 1ct is extremely doable. Gosh you can probably do it for closer to 5k if you drop down to SI1 which is what most PSers will say is standard as who cares if you can see inclusions with a 10x loup or not.

Is your budget to include only the stone or the stone and setting? If it is for stone and setting, what type of setting are you considering? Simple solitaire or something more ornate such as a halo or a setting with melee?

I would say not to sacrifice cut. The cut of the diamond is what gives it it's amazing optics and beauty. I would also recommend that you only consider stones that have been graded by GIA or AGS, they are the most accurate and consistent labs in the world and the only way to be sure that you know exactly what you are purchasing.

You have a nice budget for a 1ct stone assuming the budget is for the stone alone, and should be able to find what you are looking for without making much sacrifice at all. However if you wanted to consider a larger stone, there are areas where you can safely make concessions without sacrificing beauty and performance. As the others mentioned, it's possible to go as low as an SI and have the stone be completely eye clean. Depending on your/her color sensitivity, you can safely drop in color as well. Many people won't begin to see the subtle color differences in a set diamond until around H and for some I and J are plenty white when set in it's mounting. Color is very subjective and I would recommend that you view some stones in varying color grades to help determine what your preferences are. I'm less color sensitive than many and I'm ok with a J face up but can easily see body color when viewed through the pavilion. I think that most would agree that G/H VS2/SI1 offer the most value without any real sacrifice. From a quick search that combination would allow you to drastically increase your stone weight if you wanted to consider that.

Your budget is healthy enough to not need to sacrifice any C at all.

Carat - enough to get a 1 ct stone, perhaps even larger if you lower one or two requirements of the other Cs.

Cut - to me, this is the most important C that I will never sacrifice. Most people outside of PS rarely talk about this C because it can be difficult to quantify yet the effect is one of the greatest visually. An excellent cut stone is incredibly lively and vibrant in all types of lighting conditions, helps lower coloured diamonds like J look white face up, can help mask lesser inclusions face up, and maximizes the actual face up dimensions of the diamond. A poorly cut diamond requires specific lighting to sparkle, can have dead areas, look tinted, face up small and even actually look smaller.

Colour - some people are colour sensitive, yet prefer warmer colours. In general though, I tend to stay around the G and H range for engagement rings unless I specifically want something icy white (E and F) or something slightly warm (K and L). This warmth is more easily seen from the side view and also as the carat weight increases.

Clarity - eye clean is all that is needed. Some want it eye clean from all angles but to others, just eye clean from the top view is good enough. If you are eagle eyed and want to see absolutely nothing, VS2 is probably enough. If you want to maximize your budget, there are plenty of eye clean SI1s but you might spot something from the side occasionally.

In 10k you do need not sacrifice but ensure you have the diamond with HCA Score 2
