hi everbody,

my name is ivan and i''m about totake the big step. i live in a smaller community and am looking to buy a diamond. i''m thinking of proposing with a diamond and letting her pick the setting.

i really dont know much about diamonds, would like to spend about 7000 cdn on the diamond.

Hey Ivan!

I am Canadian too and I can tell you that the best place to buy is from a recommended PS vendor. The prices, customer service and everything else are much better than you will find in Canada. Importing is easy peasy. All you pay is the sales tax on the Canadian value of the ring, and you would pay that anyways in Canada.

Might I recommend that you buy the diamond and set it into an inexpensive temporary setting? They cos tabout $250, but then your intended can enjoy wearing it while you decide on a setting.

To help you, please tell us more about what you want. What shape? What size are you hoping for? Do you or she have a preference for color or clarity?

thanks for replying dreamer.

whats a ps vendor?
i like the idea of a temporary setting, good stuff. that way she can wear it.
as for size and clarity, i think over a carat, how clear are my options?
shape? no idea lol

A PS vendor just means a vendor that sells stuff online who has a GREAT reputation on Pricescope. This forum is a great resource because the vendors who reply on the forum for much of their business are held accountable for any of their actions by the forum -- if something bad happens it is publicized here. So there are no schenanigans. Anyways, there are a few vendors who I would not hesitate to use, or have used, because of their stellar reputations and the very high quality anf value of their products. In no particular order:

www.goodoldgold.com
www.whiteflash.com
www.briangavindiamonds.com (their website is still under construction but they are the founders of Whiteflash now working for themselves again and they are great, you can call for help).
www.highperformancediamonds.com

The above have diamonds in house and provide a lot of information about the diamonds so it is easier to pick.

You sound like a newbie so before you go further read through all this stuff http://diamonds.pricescope.com/

You know your budget, and if you are not certain about color and clarity and don't have a preference, then I suggest looking for the largest G/H color VS2/SI1 clarity that you can afford. That will probably be around a 1.00 - 1.25ct round brilliant, if that is the shape you want. ETA This is all assuming that you buy an ideally cut diamond of course

But since it is the most important feature of the dimaond, then hopefully you will!

Has your girlfriend mentioned that she likes a particular type of diamond? If not, then a round is the safest because it is traditional and also timeless and classic.

Read the tutorial to get a better idea of what each of the 4 C you want, which is more important to you/your gf and what shape does she prefer. Then we can help you better.
