I''ve decided to get my nieces, ages 6 and 7, small strands of freshwater pearls for Christmas. I''ll be getting them from pearllunar, but i''m not sure what size I should go with, and how long to make the strands. I was thinking either 5-6mm or 6-7mm, but I have no idea how long to make them. Anyone have young daughters with pearl strands?

Kelli, my first strand was a hand-me-down from my mom, with small (5-6 mm) pearls. I still have them, though I''ve moved on to much bigger ones

I like the size a lot - it''s substantial for a younger girl so she can grow into it, and I think they could comfortably wear that strand even when they''re adults (and some prefer smaller pearls anyway). I''m not sure about length - 16" is standard but I''m thinking they might be too long for the girls now (but then again, much shorter and they might not be able to comfortably wear it later, unless they''re ok with a choker, etc.). What about a pearl pendant on a short chain? That way they can just get a longer chain as they grow older?

Thanks BEG:) A pendant is a good idea, but the six year old always notices my strands in particular, not so much my pendants. If I buy the strands and clasps from pearl lunar but have my local jeweler string them, he could just give me the ones he leaves off so they could add the rest as they grow into them. I don''t know why I didn''t think of that before... Do you have any pictures posted of the 5-6 size? I''d love to see them!

I got some 5.5-6.5mm 16in strands for my friend''s daughters from pearllunar. They''re the perfect size- longish on them now, but they should be able to wear them forever if they want. Very dainty. The girls are ummmm... 5 and 8 I think?

That's a great idea Kelli! And you're right - from the viewpoint of a young girl, a pearl strand is much cooler and more "adult-like" I think.

Here's a pic of my three strands - I think the pink ones are 8-8.5 and the white ones on top are 6.5 mm.

The ones below are my 5-5.5mm? strands

Thank you LittleGreyKitten and Brown Eyed Girl! I''ll go for 5-6 then. And thanks for posting the pictures BEG. Your pearls are all beautiful!

I received my first pearl strand from my aunt when I was 8. I still remember how much I loved getting it. I think it will be a wonderful present for your nieces.
