Hello all, I am trying to decide on whether or not I am getting a good price on an enagement ring I recently purchased from Shenoa & Co. in New York. I have read about their mishaps on ebay, but I have to say I purchased this diamond in the store and I have had nothing but good experiences with them. I just wanted to solicit some opinons about the diamond grading and price to see what others think.

My diamond is a GIA certified 1.32 Asscher cut 6.31 x 6.13 x 3.97 mm, F color, VSI clarity, Depth: 64.8%, Table 64%, Girdle - Thin, Cutlet - None, Polish - Excellent, Symmetry - Excellent. No Fluorescence.

It is a solitare platinum setting - all in the ring cost me approximately $9,500.

It looks great, but am I better off going with a slightly lesser grade 1.5ct? Or is there no real discernable difference in size between the 1.32 and 1.5 in an asscher cut? Thoughts?

Well, that depends on the dimensions more than the carat.

So true. Can you post a pic of the ring you purchased??

It seems that the other asschers I have looked at don''t have the Depth and Table ratings that this one has, nor have I seen both Polish and Symmetry as Excellent. I guess the real question is, is this diamond I am buying a high quality diamond and is the price reasonable?

With asschers we need some pics. Can''t go by numbers alone.

I understand. I will try and get a picture, I haven''t picked up the diamond yet planning on doing that next week or the week after.

Asschers seem to be tough to find, I know not many of the stores I have visited had what I could call a wide selection. What is everyone''s opinion on the asscher cut itself?

This whole process has been somewhat stressful, I am trying to find some peace of mind in my decision.

Thanks again

Of COURSE we want to see pics, but the reality is, with a tricky fancy like an asscher, if it spoke to YOU and your eyes loved it, then....that''s that, right? Unless you''re not 100% on it and you want to see if you can get a different stone or somehow more bang for the same buck. Are you SURE about Shenoa''s return policies in case you change your mind? I''ve heard some doozies. (But I also have been inside their store on 47th and seen some lovlies. I suppose you have to be case by case and trust your eyes too.)

STORM? How do those dimensions (so far) look to you?

Yes I have a 100% Lifetime upgrade for full value at any time plus a 30 day money back guarantee. I''ve delt with Boris there and he has been very helpful throughout the entire process. He never rushed me to make a decision and showed me a ton of diamonds and never pushed me towards any one of them. He did like this diamond the best, even better than some of the more expensive diamonds particulary because of the dimensions and polish and symmetry. When you look at it it really sparkles and my girlfriend loves the asscher cut.

The look depends on what you''re aiming for. Are you looking for a square emerald, or something that mimics older asschers and the Royal Asscher with the distinct octagonal windmill appearance? The table and depth are nice for an emerald cut but it may be shallow for a proper asscher look. Without crown information we can''t begin to tell how lively the stone is. Also, until we actually *see* the stone we can''t tell if it''s square--like a square emerald--or octagonal like what I think of as an asscher.

On the #s & cert & stats you DO have ... sounds like a pretty good deal! Maybe very good!

I would echo everyone''s contention that Asschers really have to be judged by your eyes (sometimes pix).

I''d be VERY psyched on the F, VS1 EX EX ... (EX EX is much more rare & usually carries a hefty premium if I recall from shopping Asschers -- I ended up with VG VG).

Even so-so companies get great stones in & make nice deals sometimes. If you''re looking for lifetime trade up guarantee or lots of customer service, research Shenoa more, but if you just want the stone & run -- sounds pretty good!

From the GIA certificate it says Square Emerald cut but from what i heard it is similiar to an asscher correct?

The ex/ex rating shows because I eyeballed the diamond vs others that were vg/vg and you could definitely see the difference.

However, is there a real discernable difference in size between the 1.32ct and a 1.5ct? Is it worth sacrificing in quality, which I believe I clearly have in the 1.32 ct just for .18 addition in size??

what a position. I was in the exact same position.

I was intersted in an asscher cut 1.55 carat H, SI1 eye clean, but for an equal price I could have gotten a 1.31GVVS2. To me, personally i really can''t tell a difference between G/H and since the SI1 was eye clean, i couldn''t tell a difference with anything of a better clarity. then someone told me that the size difference was almost a quarter of a carat differnce ! so i decided to go with size. someone wrote before that after you leave the diamond store, the thing that you notice and remember is size and sparklyness etc. I don''t think anyone other than a gemologist and my insurance company will know it is an SI1 nor will anyone be looking at my diamond with a loupe. So i happily went for the larger stone. while some people will not sacrifice anything for absolute quality but if i am going to spend such a fortune on an e-ring, it would really bug me to know that i could have gotten a bigger diamond that I would be satisfied with.

by the numbers this one can go either way.
table is on the big side but not too bad it can work with proper cutting.
Its right on the edge of my cut off point.

little off square

depth is good.

need a picture to say more.

If I was calling a stone into an online vendor id pass on it but there are nice asschers at that number point, in a b&m id give it a look and it might be a pleasant suprise.

I just decided on going with a 1.52ct GIA certified eye clean SI1 with the following measurements. I got this one at the same exact price from Shenoa as my previous diamond (1.32 - F- VSI)

Measurements - 6.47x6.18x4.30mm

Depth - 69.6
Table - 54%

Girdle - Thin to medium
Cutlet - None

Polish and Symmetry - Ex/Ex
Clarity - SI1
Color - F
Flour - None

I think that given the fact she has her heart set on a 1.5ct I think I got the most for my money and I louped the diamond and while I could see a feather and a cloud with the loupe I could not see it with my eyes and I am 26 so thank god they haven''t gone on me yet!

Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Is the diamond tilted in that picture? It looks like it might be to me. Also, the pattern looks off to me, especially where the widmills meet in the "center". Have you seen it in person? What really atters is if you like it in person. Good luck!

Personally I would wait to hear Storm''s feedback on these stones. He is very passionate about asschers and will help you find the best one for your $, as mentioned above this is a tricky cut in that there are many variations and the supply is often limited. But when done right they are exquisite and lovely. I too am hoping for something similar to what you''re looking for. Best of luck! And keep us posted the more pix the merrier!

bad picture but other than being off square doesnt look like a total trian wreck.
could look ok in person if you dont mind the off square and some people like em that way better.
It isnt one Id buy.
