Howdy,

I''ve been trying to source a 2 kt stone for my mother as she is trying to upgrade from her current 1 kt stone. I''m running into an issue because my mother went by the local Jared where they told her they would sell her at 2 kt Leo for $17,500 and give her $3,950 for her 1 kt. My problem with this is that I''m guessing that they are giving her a stone that could be purchased retail for $13-14k (when I punch in the specs into Blue Nile I get pricing in that range). On the flip side, when I punch in the pricing on my Mom''s current stone at BN I''m getting retail around $3k. I''m guessing they don''t care that they are "overpaying" on her trade-in because they know that they are already making a small profit on the sale and will make additional profit out of what they can get from my mother current stone. (I had my mothers current stone looked at by two jewelers that I have some faith in and they came up with cash pricing of $500-$1,400 due to the fact that the stone is shallow).

I''ve read a handful of the threads on the Leo and I''m less concerned about the extra facets. The issue I''m running into is that the cert for the diamond comes from Gemological Science International (the only thread I could find on them came from back in 2006) and I don''t have a great feeling about the source of the cert. I was also told that they do not get crown and/or pavillion angles unless it is for their "Peerless" cut. The GSI cert states the following:

Measurements: 8.14-8.12x4.98mm
Weights: 1.97 ct
Depth: 61.3%
Table: 56%
Girdle: Thin-Medium
Culet: none
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Clarity: SI1
Color: F
Fluorescence: None

Is there anyway to put this stone through the HCA without crown and pavillion info? Thanks for any help as I''m just trying to make sure that my mom does not get ripped off by Jared in this "deal".

Regards,
Joe

If they "would not get" crown and pavilion for me, I "would not buy" from them, simple as that.

Yup. It is not a deal. Better off keeping the original diamonds, make it a pendant or something, and start over for the new diamond.

Hi Joe,

No unfortunately, the angles are a crucial factor in the HCA's calculations. You could ask Jareds if they have a Sarin or Helium scanner and can get the measurements that way, but from what I understand with the Leo being a branded cut - for one thing if I remember rightly they have a deeper depth than the ' Near Tolkowsky' type stones we normally see here, not sure what their angle ranges are.

Just to put it in perspective, these are awesome diamonds in the 2ct range, around $15K. (Then she could keep her current diamond for a pendant, RHR, earring, or sell it herself.)

I would much rather have a Brian Gavin stone and keep the 1 ct.
