Hello -
Not a normal poster, but I have gotten a ton of useful info over the years from the experts here. My brother in law is getting ready to propose, and has narrowed it down to 2 diamonds for a solitaire setting engagement ring. Both are round brilliant and GIA cert. Both are very pretty in photos. Can you let us know which looks better by the stats?
Thanks so much in advance !

They are both deeper than ideal. Can you please post the GIA reports? More information is desired before a recommendation can be made. The price point of each will be helpful as well. Thx

We don't have enough info...could you provide the angles of the stones or the GIA certificates?

Thanks so much - I have updated the original post with the Cert#
Also - both are in the $7400-7500 range he tells me - but he thinks they will go down some.

They're both poorly cut so I would advise your BIL to pass. They score a 5.3 and 3.6 on the HCA tool and we normally look for a score under 2. Would he be open to shopping online? There are so many options for rounds that he shouldn't settle...if he insists on shopping through his local jeweler, tell him to stick within these parameters:
Look at GIA Excellent cut only. Even the excellent cut range is broad, and some stones are much better than others.
table: 54-59
depth: 60-62.3
crown angle: 34-35.0 (sometimes 35.5 or 36 if the pavilion angle is 40.6)
pavilion angle: 40.6-40.9 (sometimes 41.0 if the crown angle is close to 34)

Ooh! Those are terrible HCA numbers! Definitely tell him he would be throwing his money away with those stones. He can do better.

Tell him you have to cut and paste the blue nile links in the tool bar.

Thanks so much for the help. He is willing to shop online - so the links will be helpful.

Thanks again for taking the time to look and offer advice !!

It would be helpful to know what his total budget is, what type of setting he's looking to get and what his priorities are. I posted stones with minimum carat weight of 1.3 but some have SI1 clarity. He should never sacrifice on cut...but other things could be tweaked to maximize the budget!
