Looking for a ring with a round diamond with tiffany setting for <11k. Been to some local retailers in CBD and been searching online and got really confused. Any recommendation of the specs of the diamond and where to get it? Still deciding if it is viable to buy it online from overseas vendor? thanks.

You may want to re post this in Rocky Talk. Other PSers will be able to help you to find something on line with the vendors.. Maybe someone in Sydney can point you in the right direction locally. However, the cut and price that you pay online (including the GST when it gets back to AUS) and the quality, will be far better than what you can get here in AUS.

edited: Good luck with your search... start thinking about size and colour of your round diamond enjoy shopping!

I have just joined PS. I have a fantastic tension set oval 1.25ct platinium custom setting from Simon Grew @ August Pemberton in Paddington Sydney. He does lovely rings. He previously worked for Jason Ree in the Dymocks Building I believe.

I also know of Sam @ Eskae at Mosman. He is a very good private jeweler.

When I worked with Simon I bought this stone from The Diamond Exchange Canadian Ice but this was many years prior to the likes of Blue Nile, James Allen who now ship simply to Australia. Simon can source stones but is happy to set your centre stone. It will save you some money but obviously he needs to make a living so he will have a higher price for the setting if he doesn't make money out of the diamond......I did read a forum re: setting prices, as we all can see the price of diamonds online he will not overcharge but all will need to make some money for their time searching. I really think with a little research you can do a reasonable job. I didn't go Blue Nile Signature but stuck to ideal round specs.

With your budget it will depend if diamond 4Cs and the metal you use. Commonly, a jeweler told be people go WG rather than platinium here in Sydney to maximize the size of the centre stone. Not sure what your preference is.

All this may be like sucking eggs......you may be a really experienced jewellery person...sorry but hopefully not and you find this helpful. Just my thoughts coming from my experience getting a number of rings made over the years and remembering all the things from the start to consider.

I have also bought a 1.5ct RB from Blue Nile and was happy with the stone if you can read GIA reports and I did have them check if it was eye clean....read forums here on this I learnt so much and about laser inscription etc. I used live chat and narrowed it down and called a number of times and had a couple of stones on hold and looked at and then asked which on paper was the best stone for value and specs etc.

If you are getting the stone set at the same time.....I would get it shipped to the jeweler. Have you looked at Mark Morrell designs if you like solitares. They are gorgeous and a nice variation on the classic 6 prong- just a thought. You should only pay 10% sales tax not duty and with our dollar today at $1.04 it should work out well.

I'm sure we have great jewelers but via this forum you can narrow your design down and get the perfect ring not too custom and it will definitely turn out perfectly. Lots of photos of lots of versions with slight differences so you can build up exactly your own preferences if fine details matter to you. The more I look the more I get decisive on exactly what I want and can narrow the instructions down or atleast know how to answer them when they arise.

My only concern is ring size. Seems to vary....advise to go slightly bigger rather than small and in hot weather fingers swell + over the years weight gain although I don't want to think about it.

Sorry this is so long and hope this helps. Good luck with your project.
