OK so I showed her pics of the diamond in its setting and she HATED IT(without saying so but I could tell)....for those that know I was going to be having the ring fixed(set off the x/y axis and prongs looked off) ....well know i think I might want to try and find a NEW HEAD for the diamond...she saw a setting at a local store that the clerk showed her(it didnt have a stone in it yet it was ordered for a customer that is having a radiant(is what my GF thinks she said) reset the customer is resetting in platinum from YG supposedly...MY GF really raved about how nice it was and it was similar to a setting she had seen and liked before....

the setting is a V when viewed from its profile....the PRONGS are ROUND and there is NO HORIZONTAL BASKET

From my take it is similar to this pic without the horzontal bar and is a complete V(as in the 4 prongs all meet at the bottom....I searched stuller and cant find anything like what she has described...

maybe the Stuller Solstice?

GOG has pictures on their website. This is what my ring has for it's head (I have pictures in the SMTR forum). It's a V 4 prong but more softly rounded than the sharp look.

Bearman - I feel for you - you do have a lovely stone, though - it will look great in a variety of settings. I am trying to picture just what she might have seen... til I figure it out I have a few suggestions (since I have have been searching for an Asscher setting, too - I think a little like the one you are describing).

Leon Mege has a simple setting without horizontal basket - I will try to find the picture and post it here for you - you could alaways get a jewler to fashion one for you that is similar and even customized more to GF specifications. This takes time - but you both may be willing to wait to get it just right.

Dimendscaasi has the largest selection of Asscher specific settings I have seen - many of them are lovely and seem reasonably priced. He offers the stones for sale in the ring on his site but you can buy just the setting. I am working with them now on a setting for a round gemstone I have and they're good.

I found lots of great pictures on sndgems - the variety is so enormous that you are bound to start narrowing the field to find something similar to what she was looking at - can you peruse the pics together? That would be ideal, then you can talk about what you both like, etc. and that will make things go faster and easier.

Did the setting she saw have setting stones or was it a solitaire? (I know you have a solitaire now). Does she want an antique look or modern, traditional - keep in mind what you want to do about the wedding band - that may help you out. Precision set has some nice sets. I hope this helps an is not too general.

I can't post pictures - hopeless! Follow the link if you are interested:

Leon Mege - www.artofplatinum.com - three stone rings, page 2. The setting is r032-10W - third row across, third picture down - setting shown in YG. See how it has no horizontal bar?!

THis is the only one like it I have seen. I was given an Elara ring thathad to be returned - but I loved the setting - which had not horizontal bar. The stone(s) appear to float - like in a tension setting - while having the safety and more traditional look of prongs. Check out the picture of the Elara solitaire and you;ll see what I mean - am I getting the jist of it or am I way off?

take a look at the home page of the daniel k website. i have done several variations (with and without sidestones, with bead set diamonds, with channel set rounds or squares) of that solitaire for asschers, square emerald cuts and radiants, and it is fabulous. the one on the home page has split prongs, but it works equally well with a traditional square 4 prong basket.

good luck!

On the 'show me the ring' forum there is a new cushion shape ring from GoodOldGold. It seems that the make of the prongs on that ring is close to what I think you have in mind: little metal and no side-bar, letting the stone "float". Maybe you could drop a call to Jonathan or the owner of that ring (cushionsearcher) to track down the source of the custom-made setting? It should work...

Stller's is made for rounds. You will still need it adaped - if this is feasible at all. Also, there is a serious gap bethween the Leon's work, DK and Solstice. I am not sure wether this is important or not. The setting on the LM site is an old style basket setting. I am not aware of exactly the same style being applied to square stones (it is used in 6 or 8 prong settings for rounds) - this is one Q for a ring maker, if you choose to have ths setting made on order.

Verragio does this to people already, and the styles for princess cuts do not have V-prongs. It took me a bit to remember where I saw such designs...
Hope this helps
