Sjk - I personally think that this question varies based on fashion or what is popular. I know for certain that nowadays most people will say white gold or platinum as yellow gold has declined in popularity for diamond jewelry in the past while. Just go to the jewelry store and you will barely see anything set in yellow gold.

I love yellow gold and would have preferred to have my own setting done in yellow gold, however, due to the popularity of white gold & platinum these days, it was really hard for me to find "my perfect setting" in yellow gold, thus I opted for white gold and my setting also has a little yellow gold filigree ... best of both worlds, right?

Essentially, to answer your question, I think that popular opinion would be ... white gold goes well with diamonds as it is better suited to the "whiteness" of diamonds, for example the D or F diamond color you will be getting. Warmer colored diamonds might looks better or whiter, however, in a yellow gold setting as opposed to a white gold setting.

Its true most of the places we see either white or plat. But its just that I felt diamonds looks more prominent when its set on yellow gold when I saw the 3D Hand view on james allen''s site under Pre-Set category , for sizes around 0.5 and 0.75.

If you like the yellow gold and found it to stand out more ... Go for it!

Either way, if the diamond is beautiful, the setting regardless of the color metal, will only enhance that.

It is purely a matter of preference which one you choose. Either looks great with well cut diamonds, many here have J's and even k's set in WG and they look superb, others choose YG like myself. Some still prefer YG and have D's and E's set that way, really any well cut diamond properly set, will look fabulous no matter what colour setting you choose, go with what you like.

Sometimes WG may need replating, it isn't always maintenance free, so that might be a consideration.
