Hi all, I have been given the choice between three princess cut diamonds. I''m not too sure which to go with. Diamond A and B cost the same but Diamond C would cost $200 more. Is it worth paying $200 more even though the fluorescence is faint and it has the comment about the surface grain? What do the comments mean? Below are the three diamonds as described on the GIA cert. Thanks! Your help is very much appreciated.

DIAMOND A
RECTANGULAR MODIFIED BRILLIANT

Measurements:5.65 x 5.31 x 4.29 mm
Carat Weight: 1.01 carat
Color Grade: H
Clarity Grade: VS2

Depth: 80.8%
Table:75%
Girdle: Slightly Thick to Thick
Culet:None

Polish: Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence:None

DIAMOND B
SQUARE MODIFIED BRILLIANT

Measurements:5.45 x 5.38 x 4.08 mm
Carat Weight:1.00 carat
Color Grade: H
Clarity Grade:VS2

Depth: 75.8%
Table:77%
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick
Culet:None

Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence:None

Comments: Additional clouds are not shown.

DIAMOND C (+$200)
SQUARE MODIFIED BRILLIANT

Measurements:5.79 x 5.56 x 4.02 mm
Carat Weight:1.01 carat
Color Grade: H
Clarity Grade:VS1

Depth: 72.3%
Table:72%
Girdle: Extremely Thin to Thick
Culet:None

Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence:Faint

Comments: Surface graining is not shown.

The depth on A is obscene. The table size on B is pretty large... I'd dismiss that stone.

C has some potential, but we'd definitely need some good pictures to judge. Is this a local store that is offering the stones?

Surface graining is not a problem in this case, it just is not shown on the clarity plot.

Yes, I think 3 is the best by the numbers. But we cannot tell much about princess cuts without photos or ASET images.

Don''t worry about surface graining not shown, it is a common comment and you will not see it in real life.

don''t know much about squares... I feel like an ex thin girdle is problematic though! unless it''s knife edge only in one small spot and med everywhere else or something

I am purchasing the diamond along with the setting online so I can''t really see all three side by side. Whatever I choose I''ll receive it in the mail and have 30 days for a return.

Is it worth getting C over the others for $200 more?

Yes I didn't notice that about C, extremely thin is not something I like to see.

Cardinal I assume you are ordering from BN or something. What is your budget? Would you like us to try and find you a better cut stone with proper images etc? Without a great cut the diamond will not sparkle.

That would be great. My budget for the diamond is around 3,500.

Ok, here''s another one. Is this one better than the ones above?

Square Modified Brilliant
Measurements: 5.67 x 5.43 x 3.90 mm

Carat Weight: 1.00 carat
Color Grade: F
Clarity Grade: VS2

Proportions
Depth: 71.8%
Table: 77%
Girdle: Slightly Thick to Thick
Culet: None
Finish
Polish: Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: None

OK, I am not an expert on princess cuts, but Goog Old Gold is

Here are some in your budget:

I do not know enough to select good ones from James Allen but they are your best bet for price point. Stone Cold and others are good at that, I''m sure they will be along to help!

See the trouble is that we can eliminate diamonds that show big red flags based on the numbers, but we cannot help you select a princess cut that is great by the numbers! You just cannot judge cut in princess cuts remotely without images.

Try playing around with James Allen: www.jamesallen.com They have images and will provide ASET if you ask. Their prices are also comparable to BN. But you are very unlikely to get over the 1ct mark in a well cut diamond for your budget. You really should not compromise on cut.

I don''t feel any of the ones you listed have good cuts. The tables on all of them are too large. Without a good cut, a princess will not sparkle. I also see other problems with the ones you listed.

Hi Cardinal

The third of the original selections might be worth further investigation if the extremely thin area of the girdle is checked and is not a durability issue.

The diamond above has a table which is too large.

So I spoke with the seller and he''s giving me another stone. Here are the details:

Square Modified Brilliant
Measurements: 5.48 x 5.41 x 4.07 mm

Carat Weight: 1.02 carat
Color Grade: H
Clarity Grade: VS2

Proportions:
Depth: 75.2%
Table: 72%
Girdle: Thick
Culet: None
Finish:
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: None
Comments: Additional pinpoints are not shown.

What do you guys think? Should I be concerned about the girdle or pinpoints?
