Hello pricescopers,

I am on the verge of purchasing a cushion cut from the good folks at ERD.

Here are the specs:

Cushion Brilliant
1.05ct
Color: G
Clarity: VS1
Polish: VG
Symmetry: VG
Depth: 68.8%
Table: 62%
Dimensions: 6.35x5.74x3.95
No fluorescence
GIA cert.

On the GIA cert it doesn''t have a ''Laser Inscription Registry'' that I''ve seen on others. Does that matter?

Also, before I found this site and all of the good advice and reviews on here, I contacted MDC Diamonds about a ring they showed on their site. To make a long story short, they are offering me the following diamond, but I am not sure about dealing with them. They don''t seem to have a stellar reputation, and the picture they sent me seems a little funny to me...

Cushion Modified Brilliant
1 ct
Color: F
Clarity: VVS1
Polish: EX
Symmetry: VG
Depth: 66.7%
Table: 61%
Dimensions: 6.1 x5.46 x3.64 mm
No fluorescence
GIA cert.

I will post the photos below

Any opinions would be *greatly* appreciated! This is my first time buying a diamond!

And here''s the picture from MDC Diamonds of the second one, 1 ct.

Also, the price difference between the two is negligible....

if the price difference is negligible, why don''t you go with the first one...seems like you are more comfortable going with ERD

Ask ERD for an ASET photo of the cushion, it will tell you a lot more about the diamonds light performance than the normal photo. I would personally stay away from anything labelled Cushion Modified Brilliant (unless it is a special branded cut). Cushion Modified Brilliant is all about saving weigh in the places that don’t matter (look at the dimensions, smaller in all directions yet almost the same weight) so they can charge you more.

Laser inscription registry just indicates if the diamond is laser inscribed, doesn’t affect the diamond at all and is useful to ID your diamond. I would not let this determine the diamond, you can always have the diamond inscribed for a small fee if you choose.

Not loving the ERD stone - sorry. Looks like that is a lot of leakage under the table but hard to tell from a single photo. Then again, I don't usually like 4 main cushions.

That second stone does not look like a modified cushion to me. It is actually pretty nice - do you have the GIA report?

Have you educated yourself on the different types of cushions? Explored chunky cushions ... GOG August Vintage? Looked at the 8 main modern cushions?

Thanks for the comments. I have learned a little about the different type of cushions, not too much, but I don''t think the chunky cushions or the August vintage are for me (although they are certainly beautiful).

For the second one, here''s the GIA report:

Plus another photo of the first one....

Photographs are only good for determining facet structure and the size of virtual facets, not for judging light performance. Get an ASET if you are serious about either of them.

From what I see the virtual facets on both are smaller than I would like. They may be bright but will not have as large flashes or as much fire as I would like to see.

Smallsparkle: Modified Cushions in some cases leave more weight in the pavilion as less is cut away than when using the brilliant style. Therefore, the yield from the rough is higher and they can be priced lower per carat.

Can you get an ASET image for either of these? That would be helpful.
