I think it is time for me to get a reset (another) for my pear solitaire.

I have posted a couple other times on the details of my setting saga (a while ago).

Long story short, the original setting, done by the people who sold my husband the stone, was defective. We had bought my wedding ring at HW. We got an unofficial recommendation from someone there of a jeweler to do the reset. We had the reset done two years ago. It has come loose a couple times. The first time they tightened the prongs, and it looked ok. This time, before I went, I had my wedding ring prongs checked (eternity) at HW, and asked them to look at the e-ring. They agreed that the stone was loose and that two prongs were not touching on the top. They said the setting was ok, but that the stone should really be reseated and the prongs adjusted - not just tightened.

We went to the jeweler who did the reset last week. They said the prongs just needed to be tightened. We asked, and they said that was really all it needed. We talked about whether they should reseat (not reset that''s not a typo), they said no. We talked about a reset down the road. Our greatest concern is that the stone be protected and look nice in the setting.

Well, I wasn''t completely satisfied by all this. Then I came home and noticed that on at least one of the prongs the point (they''re pointed prongs) is now touching the top of the stone, but there is still air space underneath the prong.

It is really hard to tell someone who has worked for and still does work for some of the biggies on 5th ave that the work is not done correctly. But I am really feeling like they are satisfied with work incorrectly done.

So we are thinking of going to someone completely different for what will hopefully be a correctly done reset.

I have admired a lot of Leon Mege rings on PS. Is that what people would recommend in this area, and does it sound like it is time to move on from the current jeweler at this point?

I''d really appreciate some advice.

Thanks.

You haven''t said what type of setting you are looking for but Leon would be a good place to check if you like what he shows on his website.

It would be some type of solitaire. I want to stay in the vein of what my husband originally proposed with. I know Leon seems to mostly do beautiful pave - this would be plain, which I have seen some examples of on PS as well. I would like to look into doing something that is a platinum solitaire but maybe something interesting in terms of prongs/basket or something to give it a little twist. I am more of a classic/antique type when it comes to jewelry than a chunky modern type.

I have Leon''s classic solitaire and I love it! He is the master of prong tips...no gaps!!!

How was he to work with? Did you just say solitaire and give him free rein? I''d love to have an idea of what your experience was, given that you had him do a plain solitaire (lovely, by the way).

Thank you! I just called and asked for a price quote for a classic solitaire setting for a 1.6 ct. diamond. I sent them my stone and they emailed me the contract which allows me to check details about band width, height of the head, etc. You sign it and fax back or mail it in with half the cost. They told me 4-5 weeks and I think it was about a week longer. But that was fine since there was no particular deadline. Oh, and I left out that close to the time it is finished, they send you a bill by email with the balance plus shipping. You pay that and they send the ring. I don''t think they take credit cards, but they did take a personal check. It is very easy when you choose something that he has made before.

Thanks for all that info, diamondseeker2006. I am in nyc, which would afford me the opportunity of meeting with him in person, but it is good to know the general info on your experience. And your stone looks huge in the setting!

Anybody else want to give me some input?

Harriet, I know you have a solitaire from Leon?
