Please forgive what I'm sure is a terribly under-educated question, but I'm just beginning my search and from what I can tell, you're a helpful bunch. I'd love any bits of advice or insight that you have. I'm hoping to propose in the next few months.

What I know: I know the basics, the 4 C's, etc. I know that she LOVES the Tacori 2620 setting, which of course makes this process both less difficult and more expensive. I'm sure that she'll love whatever I get her, but there's nothing wrong with a sure thing. Based on what I've been looking at, it seems that my $8k budget might do the trick.

What I've done: I've poked around online. Bluenile, GOG and so on to get an idea of pricing and sizes. I've visited a local dealer to see the setting and hear what they had to say. Sounds like I should expect to spend about $2410 on the solitaire setting that will fit a stone that fits the rest of my budget. The stones that I was shown in the store ranged from .9ct to 1.02ct and from $4700 to $5700. I know there's more to it than that, but I had had enough for the day. I measured one of her other rings and its 16.5mm, which leads me to believe that her finger is in the 6.0 range. I'll find a sneaky way to be sure eventually. Can somebody school me on the different sizes of settings and how they affect the halo and perceived size/delicacy?

It seems to me that an eyeclean diamond, that's in the near-colorless range will suit my needs well. Of course, like anybody else, I like a good value. I'd love if you experts could point me in the right direction. I like the idea of working with a local business, but it seems that the tax benefits alone make a solid case for buying online.

I should mention that I'm also open to other settings that are a similar style (classic/vintage?) and might offer better value. In short, HELP!

First your username rocks!

Second does it have to be the actual TACORI brand or can you have one made that looks exactly like it?

Have you ran a diamond search through PS? It will give you options in your price range with the specs you are comfortable with. If you are searching for a MRB then use the HCA under tools and weed out all diamonds that are >2. Most PS vendors give a discount and if you buy the setting +diamond at their store you will get a bigger discount. ERD comes to mind for TACORI remakes. They have done a few this year which have really knocked my socks off. However, if she really wants THE tacori then forget about a cheaper immitation and go with the real thing.

Thanks for the insight; that's a great help! I'll do some searching on PS and come back with a few examples.

Regarding the Tacori, I'm open to alternatives that are a similar style (not even 'imitations', necessarily). I'm most concerned with quality, but beyond that, I'm not emotionally invested in any one manufacturer. That said, I do love the look of the setting. The price tag, on the other hand.

Both Whiteflash and Good Old Gold carry Tacori, and they both sell top-notch stones. I'd stick with a vendor that can provide both the diamond and the setting as they can often offer a "package deal".

And ERD (and Brian Gavin) have done some incredible Tacori-esque pieces. ERD is known for their cushion cuts, and BG more for his rounds, but either can source a beautiful rock!

Excellent, thank you!

For education's sake, could you all let me know if I'm missing something here. It seems to be a decent value. Is it the shallow depth and SI2 that make it less expensive?

It's that and the "very good" cut (polish and symmetry). It won't sparkle as much as GIA 3X/AGS000 stones. Btw, a Whiteflash ACA would make an awesome centre stone for Tacori 2620. If I were in a different line of work, that would be my ring of choice. Good luck with your quest!

Ah, ok, thank you! Sparkle is important.

How does this look? It's a little out of my price range with the setting, but I'm willing to stretch a bit for just the right combo. Is the J color a concern?

I'd personally limit my search to no lower than I SI1. I think the tint is seen more easily in J color. I love the 2620 and think you should definitely get the real thing since you know she loves it! I sincerely do not think that ring would cost less to have it custom made. Is the $2400 for a platinum setting? I would also go with WhiteFlash or Good Old Gold since they carry Tacori and both have excellent diamonds.

I like the stone Julie just posted. Good combo of color and clarity and cut looks fine.

Thanks for the guidance! I think I'm getting a better handle on what I'm looking for and the PS tool seems very handy.

One question. Often when I plug in my search criteria, diamonds from solomon brothers and B2C dominate the results. Any reason for this? Anything I should know? It seems that solomon brothers is a Tacori dealer as well.

If you filter by in-house stones this may change-- both have a lot of virtual listings.

Well, she said yes!

You all were so helpful (not just those that posted in this thread, but those that contributed to that many, many other threads that I read) that I thought you deserved an update.

After much deliberation, I got in touch with an extended family member of my fiance's, who I knew was a jeweler and might be able to offer some additional expert advice, if nothing else. Well, he showed great interest in the project and after discussing my needs, he set out to talk to a few of 'his people'. Anyway, we talked a bit about the Tacori setting that I liked and he talked it over with his goldsmith. They both really liked the design, but suggested that the ring might be a bit more 'wearable' if the diamond sat a little bit lower in the setting. They also both expressed concern over their own personal experiences with this particular Tacori setting losing it's smaller diamonds. Whether or not that's a legitimate concern, I'm not sure. Knowing I'd take a little different route, I was no longer concerned with it.

Anyhow, he got to work on finding me the right stone and this is where we ended up. He went and inspected it for me in person prior to purchase.

With that part under my belt, it was time to sort out the setting. Further back and forth with his goldsmith netted the CAD image below.

With that, I gave them a big thumbs up. Not knowing much about the fabrication process at all, it was fun to learn a little bit and I felt like the input that I had and knowing that her ring would be one of a kind (even though quite similar to the Tacori) was pretty special. Anyway, here are a few photos that I snapped on my desk at work, immediately after receiving the ring. In hindsight, a black background was probably not the best choice for such a photo and I should have cleaned it a bit after my grubby fingers manhandled it. I'll see what I can do to take some with more detail (any tips).

In these photos, the ring is a 6.75. It's since been resized (with no issues, phew!) to a 4.75. Opinions and feedback are absolutely welcome, but she's thrilled with it and I'm very happy, so what you have to say doesn't matter a whole lot at this point! ;)

Happy New Year!

Almost forgot the almighty hand shot. The ring is a 6.75 in this photo. It's since been re-sized to 4.75.
