Please forgive what I'm sure is a terribly under-educated question, but I'm just beginning my search and from what I can tell, you're a helpful bunch. I'd love any bits of advice or insight that you have. I'm hoping to propose in the next few months.
What I know: I know the basics, the 4 C's, etc. I know that she LOVES the Tacori 2620 setting, which of course makes this process both less difficult and more expensive. I'm sure that she'll love whatever I get her, but there's nothing wrong with a sure thing. Based on what I've been looking at, it seems that my $8k budget might do the trick.
What I've done: I've poked around online. Bluenile, GOG and so on to get an idea of pricing and sizes. I've visited a local dealer to see the setting and hear what they had to say. Sounds like I should expect to spend about $2410 on the solitaire setting that will fit a stone that fits the rest of my budget. The stones that I was shown in the store ranged from .9ct to 1.02ct and from $4700 to $5700. I know there's more to it than that, but I had had enough for the day. I measured one of her other rings and its 16.5mm, which leads me to believe that her finger is in the 6.0 range. I'll find a sneaky way to be sure eventually. Can somebody school me on the different sizes of settings and how they affect the halo and perceived size/delicacy?
It seems to me that an eyeclean diamond, that's in the near-colorless range will suit my needs well. Of course, like anybody else, I like a good value. I'd love if you experts could point me in the right direction. I like the idea of working with a local business, but it seems that the tax benefits alone make a solid case for buying online.
I should mention that I'm also open to other settings that are a similar style (classic/vintage?) and might offer better value. In short, HELP!
