With a 4 prong e-ring, do we need a side bar for extra security with a 2.4 carat round diamond, or will the 4 prongs be enough to hold it in ok? One jeweler recommending side bar one recommending 4 prongs with nothing extra. platinum is the metal we will be using.

i would appreciate any thoughts. thanks.

depends on the design of the ring but in general I would say yes it is needed with many designs.

For specific advice, photos of each design from multiple angles are needed. An open gallery is definitely possible. The Tiffany Novo (not the basket version) is a famous example.

Karl (and anyone else), are you able to say if these examples have prongs that are thick enough to be durable?

We were thinking something similar to this, see link. Very plain solitaire, 2.5mm.

This one is certainly fine. I am sure much larger stones have been set in four prongs without side bars. In that style setting, the 4 prongs are usually more substantial for security. But we advise insuring any diamond ring that would be financially uncomfortable to replace if lost or the stone damaged.
