Okay, here''s my deal. I have $3,000 (can go a little over) to spend on a shared prong, platinum set, diamond eternity ring. (It''s an anniversary gift for my wife). What gets me the most "bang for my buck"? I would like at least 2.0 TCW. Since the stones will be relatively small, do I need to be concerned with clarity selection? I''m a neophyte at this, so I would appreciate it if any/all responses are kept on the not-too-technical side. I''ve heard good things about Union Diamond and Blue Nile. I''ve also received a decent quote from Diamond Design Co. (online). Are they reputable?

I dont know anything about online dealers but...I would strongly recommend you take your wife window shopping if you haven''t already, to see which type of eternity setting she likes best and is most comfortable with. For example, I''ve always loved the shared prong eternity settings but when I tried them on I realized that I would never be comfortable with that setting because it sticks out too much - even the lowest set versions. I personally prefer a very high quality, sparkley channel set because they''re smoother and more comfy on my hand. But its a personal thing. My stepmom just got a shared prong eternity from my dad and she loves it and says its totally comfortable on her hand. FYI, Tiffany''s is a great place to just try on eternity rings because they stock many different sizes in the store so you can at least feel what each style is like on the finger. You dont have to buy there but they''re one of the only places I know that have larger finger sizes and not just the standard size 6, if that''s an issue for you.

As for quality, yes, you want good stones so you get lots of sparkle! Anything G color/VS2 and above will probably be very nice. There''s a nice site called Facets that some folks here have bought from and they have a ton of selection once you know what you want.

check out www.signedpieces.com..the have a ton of eternity sets in all different total carat weights..

I''ve bought from Diamond Design and would do so again.

If they are cut well they will sparkle nicely. I probably wouldn''t be overly concerned with clarity. I think the cut is more important. I wouldn''t go as low as I clarities though, because they often have black/dark inclusions that make the diamonds not look nearly as nice. Are you trying to match your wife''s engagement ring? If so what color is that stone. I assume you are thinking round stones for the eternity band, rounds tend to look more white at lower colors than fancy shapes. But if her engagement ring is a D in color or something, I wouldn''t go any lower than G. If it''s a G I would go to an H or so, again the cut of the stones will make it look more white as well.

Hope this was somewhat helpful and didn''t confuse you more.
