Hello from the land down under (Sydney, Australia)!

I have been trying to rapidly educate myself and finding it a bit overwhelming. I plan to propose very soon so need to lock in my diamond order asap and hoping for help choosing the stone.

My budget is US$11,500 all up incl the setting.

I am aiming for 1.6-1.7ish carat, H or I color, given the $ constraints vs size...I think it needs to be SI1? Tiffany style platinum 6 prong setting.

If I'm getting an eye clean SI1 do I need to be very clear with my definition when asking sellers to confirm (as some define it as top down but what about side on)?

I can't decide on these options:

Option A) to use Australia based diamond wholesalers (who sell direct to public) that vet/choose stones and import then build the ring locally. (They check all the stone/know what they are doing etc)

B) import a loose diamond (James Allen/whiteflash/bluenile etc) -> have local jeweller do the setting

C) have both the stone and setting created overseas and import the whole thing.

I need the ring by Christmas. Using option A I can get a 1.7ct si1 excellent cut in Tiffany setting all up for US11.5k (right on budget)- but wondering if I import something in whether I can get better specs. However want to avoid drama and great risk of things going missing or delayed in post or local jewellers not keen. If I just import a loose stone I imagine I'll get slugged more for a setting as the jeweller isn't making a profit on the stone too. If I import I pay 10% tax but not too much of an issue.

Depth, dimensions, table and fluorescence confuses me :| but I'm pretty ok with the 4Cs (should I get triple excellent?)

If anyone can help steer me in the right direction (or has any specific stones I should consider or retailers which can do the stone+setting) it's greatly appreciated !!

We went with B) (about 10 yrs ago)

For efficiency (given time constraints) and thinking about costs- probably easier to go with C) and have stone & setting purchased together

Retailers that are commonly used & rated well are:
-whiteflash
-good old gold
-brian gavin
-james allen

They all sell diamonds & have lots of options for settings.

Hi from Sydney as well. If you bring a loose diamond to a Sydney jeweller, unless you are using a stock ring mount for a standard round ie 6 claw solitaire, it needs to be made. Having a ring made in Australia is a lot more expensive than what a US made one is, higher wages, higher rents her in Oz I guess. Having a ring made is at least a 4 week process, longer depending on how busy their bench is. Also, they won’t give you any guarantee re chipping or damage during setting. Huge pain. So in a lot of ways it’s better to import the whole thing.
