Need advice with a small budget

Irn, welcome! I haven't posted much here but I'm a long-time reader and have learned so much about diamonds! As suggested by other posters - Definitely do your research in the next month and you'll learn how to maximize your budget.

Keep in mind that actual measurements in mm is more important than carat weight. For example, I just bought a .73 E I1 cushion from JA for $1500 but it faces up like a 1 carat - at 5.94 mm x 5.21 mm because it's very shallow. In fact, I haven't found any other cushion or radiant that faces up as wide and as clean for under $3500.

I was able to drop the clarity because 1. the stone is eye clean because the inclusion is clear and can only be seen if I place the stone face down and 2. my stone has the (much-maligned by Pricescope :naughty: ) "crushed ice" effect which hides a multitude of sins (inclusions). I went to see radiants in person first and looked at color, cut, size, etc to see what I was ok with. I then picked out some stones on JA and had the gemologist view them to let me know if they were 1. eye clean 2. if the color had any warmth and 3. what the light performance was.

I'm really happy with my stone, it's really beautiful! And the price was awesome for the value! And the service from JA was outstanding. They never made me feel bad for my low budget and were very honest about the stones even when they could have sold me the more expensive one. Shipping was a breeze - I had it shipped to a Fedex near my office and then impatiently waited for it.

BTW - another great PS vendor, Good Old Gold has an oval at $1345 now - $1300 with the bank wire fee. If you can bargain with them or stretch your budget a bit - I wonder if this might be appropriate. This is a very cushion-y oval, with a great color:

It's 6.5 x 5 mm - which is a really nice size stone!

I suggested oval as they tend to sell for less per carat than rounds.

Look at the oval pictured. Where the 4 prongs are located is where the fishtail prongs would be - providing squared corners.

They look like the end of a fish's tail.

Just going to throw this suggestion out there...might it be a possibility to hold off on the proposal just for a few months, say 4-5, and save up just a few hundred dollars more for the ring? Just that you said in an earlier post that you'd seen a stone on JA that you loved, but it was out of your budget. You could propose on the holiday that celebrates the end of summer - can't remember if that's Memorial or Labour Day. Whatever it is, it might be a nice way to celebrate the end of one season and the beginning of another - as in, a new seaon in your relationship, too!

If this is not an option, you can always upgrade the stone throughout your marriage. (I always feel that that's a shame though - I'm sentimental I guess, but I feel there's a special value attached to the stone that is from the original proposal. Full disclosure: I'm from the UK, where upgrading an original engagement ring is unheard of. I just threw it out there as I know upgrades are common here, and perhaps it takes the pressure off the original stone, especially if budgets are tight.)

Another suggestion...what about a sapphire engagement ring? The Natural Sapphire Company did an absolute stunner of a ring for someone on here who was also on a budget. And that look is very desirable now, with Kate Middleton having Princess Diana's sapphire!

Sorry if none of these suggestions meet your needs - I personally hate it when other offer suggestions to me that are so far from the solution that I wanted...I'm just trying to think a way around your problem.

Just curious but how horrible would the inclusions be on this emerald to you?

I went to a b&m just curious to see what they had to offer and they showed me a .5 emerald. It was really yellow and just... tiny... like a grain of rice. I wish I had jotted down the dimensions to compare to some of the stones I've been looking at... I'm starting to feel a bit dismayed about my budget and what I can get but the timing of this event is very special to us.

I've stepped my budget up to $1600 if that helps any... I'm sold on cushion/radiant/emerald... and just two more weeks before I'm ready to buy...

I'm starting to lean towards the ovals but I was really hoping for something square/rectangularish.

A couple of years ago someone posted a comparison of smaller diamonds in a solitaire setting vs in ornate settings. You might be surprised at how much punch a setting can pack. My 1/3 carat in an ornate deco setting has more "pow" than my 1/2 carat in a relatively plain setting. Something to consider!

I've been searching for the thread but can't find it. Will keep looking.

Would the ornate deco fit flush with a wedding ring? She really wanted a fancy twisted ring but she was more concerned about the wedding band sitting flush

irn,

Unfortunately, your preferred shapes tend to be deeper than some of the other shapes, so for a given weight, they're going to look smaller.

I'm going to throw out something really off the wall, on the off chance that it will give you some ideas.

I recently bought an antique/vintage ring with a 3/4 carat old European cut diamond in it. That's a round diamond, but what appealed to me was the setting, which is very squarish (and I don't even like square or rectangular diamonds). I paid $1700 for it, which I know is a little out of your budget, but there are probably similar rings within your budget if you like this idea.

I am a large person with large hands (size 8ish ring, I wear men's size L work gloves) and the diamond and setting do not look puny on my big finger and hand. Even though it's a round stone, the general appearance is square because of the setting.

Now this may not appeal to you at all, but if it does, there are some people here who have amazing skills at finding beautiful vintage rings with quality diamonds at good prices. These antique diamonds and settings aren't everyone's taste, but they can be spectacular, and can cost a lot less money than a comparable new ring.

Not necessarily an ornate deco ring, that's just my ring! But something like what LibbyLA posted, something with a bit of oomph! It can look larger on the finger. I still can't find the darn thread.

The OakGem one is lovely! And they are a reputable seller. Great find!

That is a great find!
