Need advice on safe way to trade expensive ring

How would you handle this for maximum security?

I have a ~20K diamond ring that I want to trade with a dealer for his $20K ring. He''s in Florida, I''m in Texas. We have agreed to trade in principle pending inspection of each other''s items. I don''t feel comfortable just sending mine to him in a black hole. How would you do this to keep some control over your item until the swap is finalized?

Maybe you could both agree on a independent appraiser or someone you both trust (maybe a lawyer?) and have him hold both rings until funds have been transferred and rings have been appraised and then he could send the rings on?

Yes, I was thinking appraiser. Are any of our PS appraisers in Florida?

There are several excellent appraisers in Florida, including Richard Sherwood, a regular participant here. It might be worth your trouble and feel more comfortable to fly to Florida to do this deal in person. Airfare's are remarkably cheap if you can spare the time.
