I've been enquiring with an online vendor regarding a couple of diamonds, and asking questions regarding different aspects of the diamond, particularly the inclusions (size, color, different views, etc.) both by email and phone. And it just seems very hard to get the detailed information that I feel I need to get a feel for the inclusions in the diamond. At first I was asking by email, and then called because I thought working by phone would be easier, but it turned out they would get back to me with the info I was asking by email, so it's back to email. Anyway, I particularly am trying to get information on the color of the inclusions and how the inclusions look from the side view. How do I get comfortable with this?

For example, I will ask, what color are the inclusions as I don't want to see any black spots, and what can be seen from the side view, tilted, bottom? And the response will be like, it isn't eye clean from the side view and the inclusions are primarily clear. I don't feel that really provides any information, especially not what I am most concerned with.

How do people on this forum get comfortable with how "eye clean" a diamond is? Can you please provide some advice on what you ask exactly when communicating with the consultants? Do my questions need to be more specific?

Thank you!

The reason you might not be getting as far in your discussions is because "eye clean" typically means a face up/ down through the table view.

I talked to the sales associates regarding that, in which she said usually it won't be eye clean from the side. And that is okay, but I just am trying to get more info on what can seen from the side. And the answer was just, it's eye clean from 6 inches from the top, and not eye clean from the side. I also asked what color the inclusions were because I was concerned with black spots, and the answer was, the inclusions are primarily clear. No yes or no on are there black inclusions and what the extent is. I just thought I would be able to get much more detailed information more freely, such as, there are primarily clear inclusions but there is a black spot which can be seen 6 inches from the side. I don't even know what to do except to keep asking the same thing again and again...

If they say the inclusions are clear, them I'm assuming there are no black carbon spots. Ask them what type of inclusions are visible from the side. If they said feather, cloud or pinpoint would this be easier to visualize? Ask them in those terms. It could be that you feel you will be more clarity sensitive than others and will need a higher clarity stone.

Your question really depends on the vendor you're dealing with. Some have knowledgable people who will understand what you're asking and others won't. Educated diamond shoppers are the exception rather than the norm for a lot of salespeople/dealers. Frequently the salesperson you're dealing with is simply regurgitating the basics. You need to work with someone isn't afraid to get into the nitty gritty with you - and in fact appreciates/enjoys doing so.

Also, post up images and anything else you can get and let the experts here look at the inclusions in question. What clarity are you looking at? To get something that's more guaranteed not to be viewable from the side, you might need to go up a grade or so. It also varies stone to stone. There are some incredibly clear SI1s out there and pretty questionable VS2s.

I assume you are not working with one of the vendors with 40x magnified photos? That really helps a lot.

Ask them to take and email you a clear photo top down and and other side on showing the inclusions clearly. If they are primarily clear I would assume that means they are white inclusions like feathers or twining wisps or white crystals or something like that.
