Hi Everyone,

I need an expert opinion on how to judge a round brilliant cut with nothing but the following:
1. point, diffuse, and sunlit conditions
2. my two eyes

Yes, I know there''s HCA and Ideal Scope, but sometimes all you''ve got is what I''ve mentioned.

Thanks!

Try and compare stones you are considering to AGS 000 stones if your vendor has them. If not, try finding a jeweller that carries Hearts on Fire diamonds - they are top cuts and if the ones you are considering look like these, then go for it

Also, try and view the stones in different lighting, ie. in natural light and away from the bright overhead lights of jewellery shops which makes everything sparkly. If you can''t get natural light, stick your head and the stone under the nearest table and see if it still sparkles in the dim light. Bascially the lights in those shops will make a lump of coal look great, so if it''s still looks good in dimmer areas of the store, natural light etc, then it should be ok.

When it comes down to it, if you are happy with the way it looks then go for it! Many argue that you should buy a diamond with your eyes and not from the paper, so if you love it, then go for it. Just try to see what a truly well cut stone looks like before you decide you are happy. I thought all diamonds were sparkly until I saw my ACA, then I knew that not all diamonds are created alike ( well, cut alike actually).

Good luck.

Welcome!

Firstly, don't be afraid to trust your eyes. Honey offers some great suggestions, especially with comparing with AGS0 and other top cuts. A diamond doesn't sparkle all the time, but it should still look attractive ' while it is sleeping' and not shooting rainbows. What you are looking for in my opinion is a balanced stone, which puts on an enjoyable show for you in the right lighting. Sunlight, I prefer the sun behind me high in the sky or starting to set for viewing. You should get a decent amount of sparkle and fire. Don't be concerned if the diamond looks dark in some sunlight, this is normal. Take the diamond under a tree and see how gorgeous they can look. I don't know the names for some of the lighting types in the USA, but take it and compare as much as you can in different lighting conditions.

Maybe Garry or one of the other experts may pop in and be able to help you!

Here are some videos which might help you - http://diamondscope.pricescope.com/

This video from Rhino could be very useful to you - https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/rhinos-review-the-assessment-of-fire-video.48991/

Would you like to post the proportions of your diamond so we can take a look for you?

Thanks to you both, great advice. Anyone else care to chime in?

I agree with what both Honey and Lorelei have said I would also add that in my experience holding a hand over the top of the diamond so the strong overhead lighting is blocked and see how it looks then whether there is still any sign of life.

Definitely have a look at them in as many different lighting conditions as you can :).
