Natural Type IIa Diamond w/ Orange Fluorescence

Hey everyone,

Several years ago, I posted here about a Type IIa natural diamond exhibiting fluorescence. My question was thoroughly answered at the time by @Gary H (Cut Nut) and @Texas Leaguer, for which I’m very grateful.

I became curious about the specific fluorescence color of this diamond this week and decided to investigate further using a 365nm UV light. Initially expecting red fluorescence, I was taken by surprise when the diamond exhibited an orange fluorescence.

I’ve tried searching online to understand what causes this, but I haven’t found much information about diamonds fluorescing orange. If anyone in the community has insights or resources about this, I would greatly appreciate your input.

Hey Freddy, it is a D colored diamond. I've updated the post to include the photos in my old post regarding the diamond.
 
My understanding is diamonds can fluoresce in a number of different colours, some rarer than others. I believe it’s due to minute amounts of other atoms in the crystal lattice.
 
they call that Negligible ? Seems much stronger and it's not Blue.... would have expected AGS would say Med / Strong and call out the color Orange

If i came across it i would would worry it's a Synthetic IIa, CVD method Counterfeit copy of a legit natural...

Flawless are particully risky for faking because they have no plotted inclusions to confirm that the Paper matches the Stone...

You bring up very valid points. I’m not concerned about the legitimacy of the stone, as I’ve verified the AGS inscription on the diamond. I also sent the diamond to GIA for testing, and their report showed no indication that the diamond is lab-grown or accompanied by a counterfeit certificate.

I did notice that in the photos, the UV light appears to be shining from underneath the stone, unlike the way I tested it (shining the light from above). When I shine the light from underneath, it looks much closer to the faint fluorescence shown in your photo.
 
Scary thing these days is they are forging inscriptions....There's such a huge profit motive for the bad guys given the price diff Synth ~ $500 and Natural ~ $20,000....

That’s a pretty big incentive for fraud—scary..

Definitely need to purchase from a reputable vendor as a preliminary precaution!

That's a really cool photo @stesy , and a really interesting stone! What is the fluorescence description on the GIA report?

Diamonds can have multiple sources of fluorescence of different causes and colors, and they can be highly localized within the stone. Some tend to cancel each other and some may combine. I suppose it could be a combination of red and yellow fluorescence potentially. Just a guess. But if it is type IIa I don't think red fluourescence would be expected. (?)
