Has anyone heard of National Jeweler.com? They have an up to date Diamond Price Report:

Does anyone know if these prices are comparable to Rap? I was just thinking of a general indication/average of what stones should cost for a layman.

I don't think so. NJ' report is average prices of diamonds listed on Polygon B2B network. Therefore, those prices should be much lower than Rap.

These prices are extremely interesting when you compare them to
Rap prices... As you know, diamonds are sold within the trade on
a % off Rap basis.... depending on the cut of the stone and
many other factors.. It gives you a good estimate
of how much off Rap the usual good looking diamond is sold
within the trade... something like 25%-30% off Rap...

People don't know at all about Rapaport.... and I think it's
a goog thing for the average buyer.. it won't help you at all since
there is a great risk that u will end up being happy cause you
baught your stone let's say 15% off Rap.. however, at the end,
if you were knowing that the stone was baught at 40% off Rap by
your jeweller, you will, I'm sure, not be that happy anymore.

However, if you as a buyer know more than the average guy, you should
have a certain idea of Rap... that way, you'll be able to get a
good deal and use it to your advantage.

Some diamonds sell for over rap too. This means that a price can vary by 60% or more based on cut and branding alone.

I prefer to buy under Rap

I'm the type of person who thinks that all that "Ideal" stuff
is not worth it. A stone to be beautiful doesn't have to be Ideal.

I think I'd still be happy to know that I got 15% off Rap and my jeweler made 25%..that's not bad since he has to turn a profit as well and make a decent living. If it was easy for me to go out and get my own diamond at *true* wholesale..we'd all be doing it. It's nothing like a 200% price increase on Included stones at some maul jewelers!

I think you missed the point. Some brands (more than a couple) actually cost the jeweler at true wholesale more than Rap. The true wholesale can vary by more than 60%.

I completely agree.... it's the same for stones which are close
to the 90 mark for example... they will cost your more per carat than the 75 pointer,
not only because it's weighting more, but also because it's more difficult to find...

I just read an interesting message on rapnet which D Atlas wrote if I remember well...
It was about Rap & customers and the fact that many consumers are asking for it
and that's a problem, since they don't know how to adjust the price according to cut.
