What is involved in "naming rights" for a diamond - i.e. at what size/quality/value does is a diamond "eligible" to be named, and is there a registry of diamond names? Thanks.

I don''t believe there is a lower limit to the weight of a diamond that can be "Branded". Any "special" faceting arrangement and some that are surprisingly ordinary have been formally trademarked and protected.

If you meant to speak of super large diamonds like those of the crown jewels which have names, then I think it is as much a matter of who owns it, who found it, who gave it or who wore it and still there is no exact lower weight limit although there are no 1 carat famous diamonds that I know of. If you had a bright red, natural 1 carat diamond, I am sure you could put a name on it. It would be so rare as to deserve it.

The Hancock Red Diamond....

The earliest known red Diamond, the one carat Halphen Red, was owned by a London Gem dealer. It was sold in the late 18th. Century for 800 pounds and then disappeared.

Many have speculated the 0.95 ct. Hankock is the re-cut or re-polished Halphen Red.

(But recent info. disputes this theory)
