N/S Prongs For an Emerald Cut?

Dear PS,

After a ~3 year hunt, I've just sourced a 3ct EC from Alex Park. She's stunning! You would think after 2 years that I'd have a setting planned, but no..

I have had this gold Anna Sheffield image saved for 11 years though. I've seen one in person and loved the heft of the setting, and how the N/S tabs elongated the EC. I love art deco lines and geometry. My initial thought was to do N/S tabs like this and 4 petite tab prongs at the corners. No side prongs if avoidable?

My question is, would chunky N/S tabs like this mess with the EC's light return? Perhaps less if done in a white metal? I'm trying to jerry-rig setting mockups but would appreciate any guidance from this group - tysm!

Inspiration images:
Anna Sheffield's Bea, my grandmother's class ring, more art deco lines, the stone

Just popped in to say love the L/W ratio on your diamond! Looking forward to the final result.

I don’t think NS prongs look bad on an EC if done well, but I have to say I’m not a fan of the first one - too many prongs that seem sort of haphazardly spread? I also personally think sharp claw prongs look better on an EC if you’re going to do prongs.

I agree. The inspiration pic is a little busy for me, personally. What about a half bezel, but N/S?

I think you’re going to need side prongs or tabs for stability with a stone that size. I’m no jeweler, though.

Maybe @Karl_K or @Garry H (Cut Nut) or @Wink would have some insight into your question.

Good luck!

Beautiful emerald cut and agree that the proportion is beautiful on you!! I can't speak to an emerald cut but I have thicker NSEW on an oval and it doesn't affect light return at all. I've read that if a diamond is well cut, a bezel, or thicker prongs in this case, should not effect light return in a noticeable way. Looking forward to seeing it's final home!

If you are talking about the last design shown, I can not blow it up enough to see what is holding the diamond in. I do know I would NOT like to be liable for the security of the stone if there is not a substantial end piece on the far end of the diamond. Even if there is, I would be recommending some side protection as well.

If your holding it on the ends it needs to extend into the corners to hold it from moving sideways out of the setting.
The other option is end caps combined with side prongs.
A bezel with thin sides and larger end caps can give the same look.
