WOW....

Are you into colored gemstones. How do you pick out a good one.... Heck, how do you even know what the options really are.

It took a little doing, but with arrangments by Wink I was able to get a personal tour of the mineral collections and gemstones for sale at Pala International (in reality it took more than a year from concept of idea to the trip).

Does your jewler order in a couple rubies, or other stones, for you to look at... Well, I looked at about 75 rubies today (except the ones out on memo). Now I know what ruby red really is.

We all see colors a bit different, and we all have our own concept of how deep a color should be to be perfect for us. You may never know about the stones of a bit different shade or shape.

Overall, I must have briefly looked at about a thousand stones of all kinds of colors, shapes, and yes prices.

WOW... Impressive doesn''t cover it. This is the way to pick out a gemstone.... and I did. A nice demontoid. Pala will send it to Wink, from whom I will buy it from. I''ll post more information then as I did not even write any of it down today. From well over 100 demontoids I selected 4 in my size and price range that looked good to me. Then we took those 4 back to the microscope - where I narrowed it down to one.

Compare that with the option being considered last year of putting over $40,000 of demontoids on my CC so that Wink could send them to me to evaluate... Palagems may not have even sent me the one I finally chose. And, what if something went wrong when the stones were in my posesion - and I could concievably be stuck with $40,000 in debt and no stones at all.

I fell in love with a whole bunch of other stones as well.... The deep blue sapphire''s are to die for (personal preference). Now I know what moonstone is susposed to look like; and a dozen things that I really did not know existeded. Of course, I''d love some of those rubies as well.

Palagems wholesales gems to the trade and carries gemstones by names from A to Z; and you can look at their website at:

www.palagems.com

They also have their own jewelry line that you can purchase from their store. All very good stuff. If you are into collecting minerals.... that too (and Pala might have actually mined some of the stuff you buy - as they started out as a Tourmaline mining company).

It may take a few years, but I intend to go back.. with a much larger budget than I had today.

If you are a serious buyer - or at least seriously interested in minerals and gemstones - who wants to see what the options really are your jeweler can make the contacts necessary for you to get the same tour that I got today. The people at Pala were helpfull and gracious. Josh was wonderful. Just be sure you understand what your budget is going in... It would be so easy to way overspend here...

Gee, If I only had about $100,000 to spend I''d been a kid in a candy store... Well I was a kid in a candy store... eye candy.

Oh, for those wondering about the gemshows we go to. Like the one in Minneapolis and Chicago I attended (and at Chicago with several of the gang). What is offered to the public at these shows does not even come close to what is in the Pala vaults for what the options are.

I cannot really tell you how impressive the collection and the options were...

I can only hope that a few of you get the chance to do what I did today.

Note: I may not be able to post many followup messages as I am on vacation and rarely have good internet access. It may be a week or so before I can follow up further here. But I thought you would all like to know about this.

Oh wow - you lucky, lucky thing. That is so on my 100 things to do in a lifetime list.

I''ve seen some pretty good stuff at big trade-only jewellery shows, but Pala has amazing things on their website and I can only imagine their vaults...

Welcome to the dark side of coloured gemstones, Perry.

I seriously believe that gemstones are more addictive than diamonds because there are so many different types of gemstones in various colours. They are also harder to purchase. Aren''t moonstones just the dreamiest stones? Their prices are reasonable yet the look is out of this world. I love them too.

Oh wow, totally jealous here. I don''t suppose they allowed you to bring a camera with you, hmm? In any case, we will need pictures and specs of that demantoid that you did end up getting.

I didn''t even know they carried moonstones, I love them. What size and shape is your demantoid? I assume it''s Russian???

Pala is a gem collector''s paradise. I wonder how they get the best picks of everything?

Wow you lucky dog. I truly think that''s the only way to really get to know gemstones, is to see a whole bunch in person, especially with someone who is experienced and can point out the differences between them. I''m still looking forward to doing that sometime! It sounds like you picked out a demantoid that has visible (at least by microscope) horsetail inclusions? Neat. For how beautiful moonstone is, they are very reasonably priced. I have a labradorite bead necklace I really enjoy looking at with its play of bluish colors.

Wow Perry I think you have done what most of us can only dream about. At least I dream about doing such a thing.

Congrats on the demantoid!!! I am sure it is a beauty. Please share pics when you get a chance.

You raise a very good point about the possible choices in color and quality that are out there. One of the best ways to get educated is as you have done. For this reason I salute you.

I am green with envey.

OK; Vacation is over and its back to work. It took a bit of time for Wink to get a good photo with the horsetail - but here it is along with the details. I'm asking Wink to post more on the color and other aspects of the stone. I'm partially color blind and his description of the various colors in this stone and the dispersion are not something I can do.

1.58 Carats 7.72mm x 5.8mm x 4.46 mm deep

This has a rather good cut for light return so that it has a lot of sparkle to it (instead of just being deep green).

I hope you all like it.

Thanks Skippy;

It was quite the trip and my mind is still realing from all I saw several weeks ago. I want more, more, more....

As far as the tour.... Want to come on the next one? (but it may be a while..)

I do not follow the forum as close as I used to since there is no need for an e-ring (which means that I'm available). So I don't know you that well (and I am sure versa vica - the oldtimers know..) . But I'm still interested in gemstones and have dreams of more more and more.

Perhaps someday... as well as tantilzing the forum with my gemstone adventures... I'll have a gal who appreciates both me and gemstones.

I'll note that a more normal magnification photo would not have the light interference on the sides... (top and bottom on the picture); but would not show the horsetail. I figured I should mention that before someone ask about the washed out areas. Just imaging a brilliant green stone with great light return.

Hi Perry, I just saw this thread for the first time - I was out on vacation too and all I can say is that your first post made me HUNGRY and DIZZY! lol

You did what I can only dream of doing and I''m truly sorry that you are partially color blind and can''t appreciate the huge variety of shades the earth has given us in the form of gorgeous gems. I thought it was a big deal that I went yesterday to a local jeweler that specialises in colored stones and spent a couple of hours looking and discussing, but to go to a place like Pala International!! - be still my beating heart!!

I am another that envies you. What a GREAT experience you had. Good job picking out one stone and staying in budget. Where is Pala? Did you have to travel far to get there.

What do you plan on doing with your stone? Will Wink set it for you?

Thanks all. Just remember you too can do what I did. Just be sure you understand your budget.

Pala is in Southern California for those wondering. My vacation took me from Wisconsin to Salt Lake city, to Las Vegas, to near San Diago, to Seatle, and back to Wisconsin. Lots of great country - and I saw places that I will have to go back to (other than Pala). I drove almost 6000 miles on the trip.

I have the flyer on the Aug 24-25 Rosemount gemshow. I'll probably be there, but can't make a hard committment today. I should have my Demantoid by then - and if so and I can go... I'll bring it along.

I will definitely return to Pala in the future... Right now - my next purchase is custom livingroom furnature built out of black walnut in the Arts & Crafts style (think Frank Lyode Write / Mission styles). Not all gems are jewelry.

Edited to add: I have not yet decided what to do with the Demantoid. For now, I'll get the loose stone and store it while I think on ideas of what to do with it.

Perry, sorry to be so long in getting to your post. My 34th anniversary happened and I spend a lot of time with friends and family and am just now beginning to catch up, only to fall behind again tomorrow as I am having a follow up endoscopy done. I February they went in to take out a pre cancerous lesion in my stomach and it was gone, much to the consternation of the doctor who is insisting on going in to look again since it "Should not have disappeared like that." It will only be an hour or so, but I will be drugged out and "VERY HAPPY" all day tomorrow so I wanted to come find this first.

As Perry said the stone is a very bright and vibrant color and it is difficult to see the horsetail without a loupe, but if you know where to look you can. As you can see in the color it is a stunning and quite attractive tail.

The color is a medium intense green and with the good cutting it is absolutely gorgeous. I really like the look of the stone and know that Perry made a great choice.

Good luck Wink with your procedure, I''m sure everything will check out a ok!

If it''s what is close to the center right of the stone I think the horsetail looks like a single fireworks, or a spider chrysanthemum.
That would be one neat stone to see in person.
