Hi everyone,

Just wanted to give a shout out to GoG for their great service and post some pics of the Solasfera I bought from them. I wasn't sure on what I wanted to buy for my (soon to be) Fiance, so I went with the Solasfera knowing GoG's return policy was excellent. I'm going to compare the stone to a few others I was considering and choose the one that looks best. Any way, here are some of the pics. Let me know what you think!

Sorry for the crappy quality of the pics and the knuckle hair! I didn't realize taking pics of diamonds was so hard. Here are some more..

Mods, sorry I think this should have gone in the "Show me the Bling" forum. Sorry about that, I'm a noob here.

Looks nice! What kind of a setting are you planning to put it in?

Thanks. I haven't decided yet. I want to do 4 prongs, and probably just a solid band. Nothing fancy. Any suggestions would be helpful :)

That Solasfera looks great! Very sparkly. A 6 or 4 prong solitaire would be very classic and nice.

Thanks! Any advantages of a 6 prong over a 4 prong? I personally like the look of the 4 prong better, and it seems to cover less of the diamond.

Also, do you think I should go with a solid band? It's a 1.01 carat and will be going on a size 4.25-4.5 finger. I don't know if i need a pave setting band to compensate for the size of the stone or if a solid band will work fine.

A plain shank would be nice! Does your gf like bling, or is she a 'less is more' kind of gal?

She likes bling but wants the ring to look classy. She wanted a single round solitaire so I don't know if a pave setting is necessary. I just want to make sure the Solasfera won't be underwhelming. Personally I think it will look great on her small finger and I'm sure she will love it but I just wanted to hear some other opinions on whether or not a pave setting is worth the extra $$$

I didn't know if there was an unwritten rule about a size requirement for solitaires to be big enough to look good on a plain band.

Well, some people (me included) like 6 prongs for the extra security, and think a 6 prong can make the stone look more round. In a 4 prong, it can sometimes look more squared off. But it's really just personal preference! Either option is lovely. Your girlfriend has a nice small finger, so the 1.01 will look huge on her. I think a plain band would look great, it really lets the stone pop, and she can get a pave wedding band for extra sparkle.

that sounds like a great idea actually. My only real concern with the 6 prong is the amount of real estate that it takes up over the diamond. I'll have to go to the store and see what the differences look like up close between 4 prong and 6 prong

I vote diamonds on the shank. It will still be a classic style with a little extra sparkle.

won't it be overkill if her wedding band has diamonds on it?

No way! Plus, she says she likes bling. But, it's up to you.

Solitaires (with plain or diamond shanks) or not my specialty so I can't really recommend any styles. You may want to check out Gabriel & Co. GOG sells that line.

You can refine the search based on price and metal...

You could also just propose with a solitaire, and let her decide! She may love it exactly as is, or want to switch it. GOG carries Stuller and they are super inexpensive. I personally would have been thrilled if my DH did this, and let me have a choice.

Yea maybe I'll just let her pick the setting and go with a plane one at first and see if shes good with that.

Thanks for the opinions. I'm just glad other people think the diamond looks nice. Thats what really matters.

Solasferas are beautiful diamonds! Nice choice! My diamond also came from GOG. My preference was and still is a plain solitaire setting with a diamond wedding band. I sometimes think the main diamond can get lost when there is too much bling on both bands!

My setting is the Vatche U113 which is a replica of the classic Tiffany 6 prong setting. For 4 prongs, my favorite is the Vatche Caroline, and my daughter has that one and wears it with a diamond wedding band. GOG sells Vatche so they could send the stone to Vatche to be set for you. I think it sounds like she wants a plain solitaire, and then she can help pick out the diamond wedding band.

Here are some pictures of the Vatche U113...

in case anyone was wondering, its a "G" color and yes, it is a dreaded "I1"

but it only has 1 major opaque/white crystal that is extremely hard to see unless you are looking very close and at the proper angle. I know where it is and it still takes me a while at close range to find it.

got a fantastic deal on it and no one will see it unless they really go out of their way to find it

That diamond is BEAUTIFUL !!!!!
What a lucky Fiancee !!!!
(BTW, you wear it well    )

I have an alternative stone set in a plain 6 prong solitaire and
among the things I don't like about the setting is that I can't see enough
of the side view of the diamond because of the prongs....
I didn't know I would feel that way until I saw it.

I like to see my stones, and have the light play through them,
so IF I were choosing, it would be a 4 prong....
Then a yummy diamond WB to go with it...

ETA: That vatche 6 prong is a beautiful setting though, no doubt

Thanks. I think I am going with a 4 prong setting. Are platinum heads worth it or are they overrated?

thanks everyone. i took it to kay jewelers today and had my cousin take a look at it (she works there). she said she would take the solasfera over the comparable Leos they had at the store with better clarity and the same color.

i guess i was worried about the solasfera being an I1, but since these stones are ideal cut (correct me if i'm wrong) it seems that their brilliance can overcome a white inclusion like I have in my stone. it really is a gorgeous stone and the inclusion is hard to spot, so I think i'm going to stick with it instead of going with a Leo or another RB. I feel I got a great price on this Solasfera and its very eye clean for an I1

You are very lucky to find an eyeclean I1 in a Solasfera! I didn't see your question earlier, but my diamond from GOG is actually a regular ideal cut stone and it is 1.58 cts. but it was for an anniversary...my original diamond was 1 ct. I love Solasferas but they just didn't have one the size I wanted at the time.

To answer another question you asked, if you go with white gold for the ring, I would have the head be platinum. My original ring had a white gold head and the prong tips wore away to the point I had to have them retipped. Platinum doesn't do that and will last longer.
