It explains that we don''t actually have to pay the 5% duty due to Free trade agreements, and details how to get a refund back if you already paid it.
I''m not sure what the the cost of your sis''s ring wsa, but if she''s on a budget I thought she may be interested to learn how to get back taxes she didn''t need to pay

Hi AJ, yes she did know this actually (only because I read your thread!!) but I''m not sure yet whether she will bother trying to claim the 5% back. I think she paid about $450 in taxes (5% import + 10% GST) and she may stand to get about $150 back I think. I had read your thread and directed her to it, but because this is her first ever major internet purchase/diamond jewellery purchase she was pretty keen to just get it without delay. If she only stands to get $150 refund, would that go towards having used a customs broker anyhow? I wasn''t clear on that part to be honest and for my own interest would like to know ...

i'm glad you're aware of the thread. You're correct that if one uses a broker to obtain the refund it costs around $150.
However there is no need for brokers as its quite straightforward for the consumer to do the ppwk themselves than just fax or email it to customs.

Near the end of the thread i have written out a step by step on how to go about filing for the refund-I would probably do so for the 150 your sis paid.
If she follows that thread it should be fine-but pls don't hesitate to post any questions; i will keep an eye out incase the FTA thread gets updated =)

Hi everyone, thought I would update you all ... she STILL has it hidden away in the box. Unbelievable!!! however, I think it''s because she''s now ordering a half eterntiy from BGD to match so she probably doesn''t want to unveil it until she''s got the complete set.
 
Don''t know how I missed this - beautiful!! She has far more willpower than I would have if I had that sitting in a box under my bed...
