Had my first real look at loose diamonds (rb) yesterday. My boyfriend and I went to Robbin’s Brothers. Although this is my first time looking at diamonds I got the feeling that there are much better out there even without ideals to compare. I’ve been reading a lot of posts here on Pricescope for the past month or 2 and I’ve put a lot of numbers I've seen into the HCA program. I’ve also looked at many of GOGs brilliancescope reports and seen that in most cases the numbers that equate with a score of 2.0 or below usually score high and very high performance on the brilliancescope.
So with the numbers in mind, I was hoping to see some similar tables and depths (55-58, and depth in the 60-62 range). Unfortunately, they had nothing with a table of under 60 with the depth usually in the 60-62 range. When I asked if they had some cuts with smaller tables the person working with us said he thought the 60/60 were better cut diamonds. Are they trying to maximize the size? That just doesn’t match up with what I've read here. A well cut diamond will look as big or bigger as a poorly cut larger diamond, right?
Also, I was aggravated with their term "proper" cut diamond. They didn't want to say the "I" word. They only use GIA and AIG for certs and out of the 10 diamonds I looked at 9 were AIG certs. I'd never heard of AIG before yesterday. Apparently because they're down the street in Woodland Hills, CA and it's "convenient". They did say they would cross certify. When I asked if they could provide crown and pav. angles they said that numbers aren't important, how it looks is. To me, numbers are usually a direct correlation of how the diamond is going to look. But I do agree that looking at the diamond is very important as well, even with the best numbers.
I will say that the customer service was great and they weren't too pushy. I also found a Scott Kay setting that I adored while I was there. Do you think they would be annoyed if we bought a diamond somewhere else and took it in to get it set? I also found it for the same price online at Soloman Bros. Could I order it and either send it to the seller of my diamond (if I go the internet route) or take both to a jeweler in my area?
I'm going to be e-mailing some of the vendors I've heard good things about here. I'm just still a little anxious about ordering over the internet. I really enjoyed looking at the diamond in person. I have a couple of questions;
Will a vendor send more than one stone to an appraiser in my area before we pay for it?
Do most have the ability to give a Sarin report and/or Brilliancescope report?
And if it comes down to 2 or 3 diamonds, how do you really know which one is the best without looking. You can't just go by numbers. Do you trust the vendor to be honest with you?
Thanks in advance
