I'm packing these 2 off to Leon after the holidays. I'd like to set them as rings. Here's an idea for the spinel: http://www.artofplatinum.com/4images/details.php?image_id=397 As for the emerald, I'm considering white/yellow diamond trillion sides. We've discussed the emerald before, but I'd appreciate your input before I commit myself. Thanks!

I''d love to see the emerald with yellow diamonds.

Good luck! Can''t wait to see the final products!

The spinel weighs 4.97 ct. and measures 11.08x9.02mm.

The emerald weighs 0.71 ct. and measures 5.5mm square.

Oops, here''s the emerald.

Harriet - those are gorgeous stones! I think the spinel is going to look fantastic in the ring you linked.

The emerald would be absolutely YUMMY!!! with yellow diamonds - damn girl, I can''t wait to see!!

OMG Harriet that spinal will look gorgeous in that setting by Leon. I also love your idea of yellow diamond sides for your beautiful emerald.

Lady you have fantastic taste. Can''t wait to see your finished rings.

Linda

There are 3 candidates for the green-yellow combo:

1. Yellow sides of the same shape (Leon's idea);
2. Yellow halo with a graduated white diamond shank (Leon again);
3. Yellow trillion sides (me); and
4. DNA band in yellow (me).

Any thoughts? I fear the cost of option 1.

If you're going with yellow diamond sides, what about brilliant traps (tapered)? The colored diamond sites show those at about $1500-$2000 for the pair for that size. Leon's cost to you is probably less. But I could also see trying to get all three about the same shape and size e.g. FY radiants since the emerald is not huge. What is length/width on that? Yellow sapphire could be custom cut and wouldn't cost nearly as much - nice diamonds would look better but I think precision-cut sapphires would look better than so-so diamonds.

Tell you the truth I prefer yellow accents with red; colorless or cooler e.g. blue accents with green. I'm also not as big on green stones with a yellow secondary color (peridot, some demantoid, etc.). That emerald is beautiful BTW.

The split shank ring with the halo for the spinel won't be cheap - I'd go with simple on this one. Will this be 18K YG, platinum, or both?

Leon's had stones of mine about three months now even though he originally expected it would be finished for the holidays - hope you get this ring sooner

Hi elmo,

What is Leon setting for you? Lucky duck.

I mis-spoke -- by "trillions", I meant trapezoids, as you suggest. Would you mind pointing me to the coloured diamond sides? The emerald is 5.5mm square. I''m with you on greens with secondary yellow. Thankfully, the emerald doesn''t have any.

Both stones will be set in platinum.

Several sizes of FIY traps are at http://www.fancycolordiamond.net/ under matched pairs - like I say I think they'd be less through Leon. Maybe half a carat total and 4mm+ on the long side. You could get really nice color on these and the price wouldn't be unreasonable. The more I think about it the more I think all the same size would also work well but that's probably half a carat each stone and even for radiants it's quite a bit more money. But sapphire would still be reasonable for that. With all stones the same size the ring would be fairly substantial.

He's doing a blue sapphire pendant for us.

Why didn''t I think of yellow sapphires? Thanks!

Harriet, that spinel is stunning and the setting is perfect! I have to say, though, that the emerald is the one that is much smaller, and I think it needs a halo more than the spinel to look in proportion to your e-ring.

I'd be more likely to do diamond sidestones with the spinel and do a halo on the emerald.

How about two halos?

I have a ring with a ruby that is almost the same length as the band. Surprisingly, it doesn't look out of proportion with my diamond ring.

Very nice gems. The spinel ring will be awesome!

Two Leon halos would be just fine with me! They would be totally different shapes. I do think there are ways to set a smaller stone such as a bezel setting on a wider band. But I just can''t see that emerald with two traps looking in proportion to your other rings. Otherwise, I love square stones with side traps.

Harriet, Leon's pave halo settings cost quite a bit more than the emerald did, don't they? It would affect my decision about what style of setting to use, as well as the cost/type of the side stones.

that spinel will be amazing! I so want a Leon someday!!

As for the emerald, how about something like this with yellow trillion sides? I think that would be stunning!

Emeralds are very fragile, and I think it would be much safer in a halo. That spinel will be fairly large in a halo.

That''s true! Maybe a halo around the emerald of french cut yellow sapphires? That would look amazing! Plus cut out the cost of the diamonds.

The spinel would look awesome as a three stone ring with two slightly smaller ovals on either side. Maybe white sapphires?

How about an angular DNA setting sandwiching the emerald? The ring will be a band with an emerald, rather than an emerald ring (make sense?). That should take care of the proportion issue. I wonder if there's a way of engineering it such that the top and bottom parts of the girdle are protected. Setting the emerald will cost more than the emerald itself, but I'm resigned to that. I suspect that will be the case with some coloured stones.

As for the spinel, I don't have the finger space for side-stones.

Based on this? I could see a bezel for the emerald where DNA strands intersect. Turned 45 degrees maybe, if the stone is square. I can''t quite tell whether it''s proportional and "works", interesting idea though. I do like the idea of a band better than a halo / pave for a small stone.

The closest thing In can think of would be these Tiffany rings, but I''d probably make the band wide enough to have a full bezel around the stone. But I still think emeralds are worthy of halos!

Elmo,
Yes.

DS,
Please keep the ideas coming.

For the emerald
I like lady amethyst''s idea of a halo of french cut or baquette cut stones, yellow or white stones.
The second look I like for the emerald is a simple slighly raised semi bezel with high gold content band, streamlined (is that called tank style?) band. It could even be designed to be worn with other thinner bands

I think a halo would look beautiful with the spinel, but I have no idea that would cost. If I wanted to cut costs I would do the spinel simply with the double claw prongs, something slightly vintage looking.

Part Gypsy put another idea in my head. I think emeralds look really good in yellow gold. Here is a designer that sets his stones in bezels. You could go with or without sidestones. #1183 is very simple and 22k gold, if you are into very high carat gold (18k would be fine with me, personally). I just think you might not want to invest in a Leon setting for every stone.

I''m warming up to the idea of setting the emerald in a plain band. Who makes a Lucida-esque setting in yellow gold? High carat would be lovely.

I''m afraid I nicked a crown facet on the spinel. Grr. I''ll have to re-polish it and may even re-cut it, if that will liven it up.

a friend of mine has a horizontally set yellow emerald cut sapphire (about 2.8cts) with square emerald cut tsavorite (the emerald green variety) side stones. it is devine!

Rocks, that sounds beautiful. Post a picture if your friend is up to it!

Harriet it has been awhile since I looked at settings. When I was looking (a couple years ago) I looked at Winkjones.com which links to some of the main setters like Stuller, and also James Allen. I believe Wink has a lucinda like setting in stock (look on jewlery page). In both cases they would charge a fee for setting, but not an unreasonable one. For my particular job I ended up doing a custom job with a local jewelsmith.

Thanks, part gypsy.
