I have been looking for a 1.7-2 ct old European cut diamond ring. I just love the old cuts, and wanted something around J with SI clarity or higher. After looking at ebay, oldworlddiamonds and even Singlestone for months, I found what seemed to be the perfect ring for me.
Here's the link:
http://www.doverjewelry.com/index.php?page=products&id=4228 It was listed on sale for $5499
So, my husband called, and put the ring on hold (they said they would hold it for 3 days). We were going to pay the next day.
Then strange things started happening. No one would return our calls when we wanted to pay, we left many email and phone messages.
Someone named Lynda finally called back yesterday, and was very nice. I asked her detailed questions about the ring, she even told me that the center diamond was around 8 mm. I told her my husband would call right back with his credit card information. Of course, no one was there 5 minutes later. I was supposed to finally be called back today at 10 am this morning to make a payment, but not surprisingly, this didn't happen. So I called, and was put through to a man who sounded quite senior. He told me that while the ring was still available, at the price we held it for, but that the center diamond was no longer 1.7, but was now 1.5 ct. I was so shocked, I told him I was no longer interested.
Now, after some thought, I am thinking that something fishy has happened. Why were they so evasive about this ring? Do they have remorse about the sale price? Are they switching the center diamond for a smaller one to compensate for this? I can't help but have these questions. I am certain that something fishy is going on. I was going to buy from Dover because of the great reputation they have on this site, as opposed to a random ebay seller. Now, I question this as they seem more dodgy than ebay sellers I have bought from in the past!
Any thoughts?
