My new vintage stone arrived today. See avitar.

I LOVE IT ! ! !

It's a 1.37, M, SI1/2. For the price, I was expecting, somehow, a yucky yellow-brown. It is an M but a beautiful golden straw color. It almost looks like a "fancy yellow". For the price, I was expecting a miss-shapen stone(even though the picture did not show that). It is beautifully shaped. I was expecting a dead center, it certainly does not have that.

One of my friends was here when I opened it and we both looked at each other and said "WOW".

It reminds me of blinking Christmas tree lights. You almost need sunglasses for this one. I could go on and on . . .

Anyway, I adore it. It's one of the nicest diamonds I've ever seen.

Anyone with any suggestions on how to set it? I want a simple vintage setting, hopefully not expensive. I'm a white gold person but am considering yellow gold if it would show off its color.

I don't want a setting that will cover up the sides too much, as I want to show off its nice high crown. I love the Single Stone types of settings (but want to go less expensive) or maybe something engraved. I think someone had posted an inexpensive gold e-bay setting but I can't find the link.

Anyway, thanks for looking and listening. Thanks AJ, Grace, LGK, and all.

Thanks.

I love, love, love it and I''m so jealous that you found a great stone for a great price. I''ve been looking for a cushion and am just about to charge 2 (yes two!) GOG stones on my m/c so that I see both in person.

I''ve been looking at vintage settings also that would highlight the crown and I really like Beverly K. She has 2 that are halo style but not so blingy (there''s only 2-4 stones around it). I want to have a beaded bezel as I don''t want to chip the girdle since I''m very rough with my jewelry. Pearlman''s carries Beverly K but my B&M had much better prices (around 20-25% cheaper). Here''s the one I like..

http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/jewelry-designers/beverley-k-jewelry/rings/101PP1/18/

Apparently Single Stone also sells Beverly K but charges a lot more (according to my B&M). They seem to have similar styles on their website although some of them seem like they have been altered somewhat.

Good luck with your setting search and I look forward to seeing the final product.

Thanks Jericho

The picture doesn''t do it justice, either.

It''s o.k. to charge two, really. You''ll get the refund when you send one back, promise. I get scared when I do things like that, also, though. People do that (send for two) frequently I hear.

Which GOG''s are you looking at? (Although I''d only post that after you reserve them.)

Did you see Jon''s new prototype chunky cushion: http://goodoldgold.com/diamond/4989 Wow, love it!

The setting you linked is great and the price is very good. I do like bezels as they give more protection.

Keep us updated !

Best, Sonoma

YAY!!! I'm so thrilled for you! I thought it'd be gorgeous, glad to know it is! The shape is just to die for. I adore the M/N range of colors too in old cuts, if there's no brown- the clear sunny hint-of-yellow is beautiful IMHO.

I have bought some settings from Kim Wheeling at JewelryRings.com, for a VERY cheap option; he does recasts of antique settings. They come unrhodiumed, if you pick white gold (he does ALL colors of gold upon request) which looks kinda neat with a lower color stone. They aren't like the best quality ever; I've used them for temp settings mostly, but for the price they are sturdy enough and there are some pretty ones. I have one with a "fun" stone in it, that I wore for about a year, and it is secure still. Oh, and Kim will customize settings very readily- I've had him change them to fit drastically different size center stones.

Sooooo, pics? Got pics yet?

We wanna see! It sounds smashing.

(I'm glad my obsession with antique jewelry is of some small help!)

Hey Sonoma, I''m so glad you love it, I had a feeling it would be gorgeous !
When are you planning on sharing some more pics with us hey?
You know I would personally post this over in SMTR - I think you will get more help with the setting there..
Would you mind to define your budget so we can help look? You could always try Fay Cullen, they have lots of nice vintage style mounts - just watch the return policy and customer service though

I also think a halo or a bezel will be fantastic with this stone, really bring out the cushion shape - and white melee would look fab against the pale yellow !

I know someone already suggested Beverley K - do you like their stuff?
Here is an inexpensive BK halo..

Hi Sono,

The BK setting that I linked is $1100 at Pearlmans but my B&M (Icingonthering.com) had it for $990 and then they recently had a re-mount special at another 20% off. That would have made it $770 in platinum. I never liked bezels but this one is beaded and it feels great. Plus, I know I''ll never chip the girdle which I''ve done to my late father''s diamond

The GOG cushion link that you provided is one of the cushions that I''m thinking of getting. Here''s a link to a video that Jon made for me comparing it to a 3.02 cushion he has...(there is a prior thread about this last month)

http://www.vimeo.com/1820893

I haven''t put them on hold as I''m not concerned if someone picks it up before I make my move. I totally believe in fate and if one or both gets sold, then it wasn''t meant to be. Deep inside I''m stalling because I''m too chicken to spend the money in this economy.

What is your budget for a setting? Would you consider getting a cheap temp setting while you ponder the final product?

It looks yummy in your av :)

Considering you said it has a yummy almost fancy yellow colour to it I personally would be tempted to pop it into some yellow gold to intensify the colour or possibly a two tone yellow gold around the diamond but a white gold shank.

We need a bigger photo of it!

I like what snooper did with hers recently, it''s a simple band and really shows off the antique cut and cushion shape.

I absolutely love it. I was eyeing one like that on ebay but wasn''t in a market to buy, just look. Please share with us what you end up doing with it.

Pretty stone, congratulations.

I noticed that it appeared to have a fairly large inclusion in the pic on eBay. Just wondering if that was an inclusion or just a photo artifact. Is it eyeclean?

Thanks all. I have to be fairly quick right now, even though I wanted to answer you individually as I'm pretty sick at the moment. I'm having a systemic allergic reaction to a cortisone injection I got in my foot the other day.

My doctor is aware & we are doing a course of Benadryl.

Anyway, thanks so much for the setting ideas. I'm keeping a list of them. I love a simple setting (the Leon is great) however might want to bezel it to protect it more. I really don't know yet. I think it will just come to me after I look at this stone some more, process my ideas and take it to the local jeweler and pop it into some settings. Jewelryrings.com has some neat, inexpensive settings. They would be great for colored stones, too.

I understand the hesitation about it being tough to buy with the economy like it is. It was hard to make myself do this inexpensive (but heavenly) stone right now with things being tight. But something like this probably wouldn't come around too often. Jon's supply of great cushions are there on a regular basis, though. I believe he'll be getting more of his new type chunky cushion, too. :)

No, it doesn't have a significant inclusion. It's eye clean. If it did have a large inclusion, it has so much snap, crackle and pop that it would probably be hard to see.

It may be awhile before I set it - money being a bit tight and just not knowing what I want for it yet. I will surely put up some pictures when I do. Also, I'll try to get some soon, unset. I have to borrow a macro camera from someone. This is a stone I surely want to do photos of.

Thanks so much for all your help, ideas and great company.

I can''t see anything - which part are you referring to PP? I think it may just be the contrast in that pic..

Congrats on a great find! Isn''t the color dreamy? It sounds like you''ve found a diamond that glows from across the room - one of the wonderful things about a nice M colored antique stone - they can look like they are lit by candlelight from within.

Congratulations Sonoma! Looks gorgeous! I would send that beauty to James Meyer for sure! He loves stones with higher crowns, and his bezels are delicate--if you are leaning towards a bezel. (With such a cool stone, I wouldn't set it until I found the setting--I understand the urge to set it immediately

--but I'd wait...

Here's one of his rings with an omc. (I can't help it! I'm partial to James Meyer

WOW! That is a STUNNING stone and the James Meyer setting would be gorgeous with it!

This is one of my fave BK ones, I was almost gonna get this one for my upgrade - lovely vintage look.

and here is the link to the rest. I know for sure that they are very easygoing and will customize pretty much every detail.

I am sooo excited for you !
AJ, that photo of the 79PP1 is my current favorite one too!!! I am really wanted in OEC in there!

Sonoma, you really got a gorgeous diamond! Congrats!

haHA! Hey Sonoma, just saw that ArjunaJ already posted the JM ring on your other thread--just saw your WW post to me. Sorry for the double post! And as AJ(hi!) said, JM does custom work. His website represents examples of his work, but he makes many other rings.

I''m so excited for you! What an exciting project!

Hiya Sonoma,

Congratulations!!! Im thrilled that you are thrilled with your "new" old stone [:

It does, indeed appear lovely - but Im confused, I thought the stone was an N - did it turn out to be an M after all? Nevertheless, a color grade is just a letter in the alphabet if your eyes tell you that what its seeing is beautiful

.

I would personally love to see it in a nice bezel setting because the shape is just very pretty! A pendant too, perhaps?

And, where are our pictures woman? Ya know that AJ is some kinda fierce, don''t you

LOL Grace, I can't take the credit - you know PS'ers - the gloves come off when pics aren't supplied in a timely fashion, right?

Sonoma, not sure if its what you're after, bit I came across this vintage style setting on ebay - you may be able to make a budget offer? And I love the idea of incorporating some yellow with your stone somehow..

Also this seller sells very budget vintage reproductions - no idea on the quality, but may be an option for a temp setting? http://stores.ebay.com/Blue-Tonk-Jewels

I agree with Coati, I would want to set it in a really gorgeous bezel - if you're desperate to wear it, I'm happy to keep looking for temp ideas for you.

Thanks all. Thanks Erica & Grace again. I'm thrilled and honored to get ideas & comments from such experts.

I'll try to get pictures of it later. I'm borrowing someone's camera that has macro.

AJ - that is a nice e-bay setting. I like the engraving and fillagree (except for the heart on the side; not into hearts). It is for a round, though. The other site does have some cool things. I really appreciate your help.

I've been thinking about Coati's setting more lately.

I still love the deco setting that I had previously posted. Does anyone know who does customs at decent prices?

You''re welcome. I realized it was for a RB, but a decent bench could usually change the head..anyway, I know you''re after summin more simple, and no I''m not into hearts either, lol !
I would actually ask WF for custom - their prices are good and I''ve seen them do nearly any style well, even vintage. Just make sure you collect lots of pics of what you want.

Not the best photo but I'm new to photographing stones. The color is much different, IRL.

Sonoma, that is a gorgeous stone. And that culet is luscious!

Looking forward to seeing it set

Sure looks like a lovely stone, Sonoma! So much character packed in such a little package. LURVE it!

Wow! Much less yellowish in your photo. Not that color bugs me in an older stone! It looks so yummy. I''m really loving that shape! More pics

? Pretty please?

Thanks for the pic Sonoma, ya tease! Where''s the rest, huh?..
lol, just j/k..pls do more when you can !
