@Inked I’m very curious about how DK fabricates these silver topped pieces. In the olden days they would have been made with a silver metal top piece soldered to a gold bottom, each piece fabricated separately I believe. This picture of your lovely cluster seems to show that the entire ring is cast in gold then the darkened parts are painted on, which would be a more modern technique. Or is the gold dipped into silver somehow, like plating??
In your thread about your bracelet you mention that it is fabricated from silver and gold, not painted with oxidizing paint. I wonder if you can share anything about your choices for these pieces or how they are fabricated? It is very intriguing! I love this style and have thought about it for myself one day.
For this piece I wasnt sure if I wanted to blacken it or not, so I asked for it this way. I wanted to see it and decide. It was actually a tough choice i struggled with on this one a lot, because i really wanted it to be a true to period reproduction (which would mean silver topped collets) so i did really struggle on how to do it but decided just to do gold and paint it. Also, i kind of feel like I can always redo the setting at any time for a small investment. And I only have a couple things i KNOW i will never sell and this is one of them, so its like, well it's *mine* so i can do whatever i want, it doesnt need to be 'true'. I still may actually blacken the center halo too, I'm just enjoying it like this for now.
With the bracelet i knew 100% i wanted silver collets blackened. Thats how Marie Antoinette's were done and i wanted to copy her bracelets
