They are 1/2 inch in diameter, about the size of a dime.

Edit - do you know what that type back is and do them seem pretty secure?

They are hinged backs, I guess that is what it is called. The post just "clicks" into the other end. Yes, they are super secure. So much so, that I have a hard time taking them off at the end of the night. Here is a side view with them opened.

Thanks to everyone for all your kind words. I have not taken these beauties off since Friday, and have gotten tons of compliments on them.
