I wanted to delve into the world of rubies, and wanted a starter ruby to learn about the qualities etc.

I bought this .54 carat, 4.8mm described as “pure rich red” and put it in a 10k white gold stuller crown setting.

Here it is

Thats pretty! My favourite shade of red! Good job!

What a lovely deep shade! Looks wicked :)

Love that you're sporting it as a pinky ring! How much difference is there between the photos and what you are seeing with your eyes? In some photos it really does look rich vivid red, but in the first post it doesn't look that red in stone photos. Would your ruby be of Thai origin?

@MeowMeow thank you! I do love it and I think it’s perfect for a pinkie ring. If I got a
bigger ruby at some point, I think I would go a shade less dark. I don’t know what that would be called? Pink rubies are ok, but I would still want to be red but not lighter where pink comes into play.(Ha! Wouldn’t we all $$$$)

It does not black out, but it does get dark red.

I want to stress that I do love this one.

@JackTrick thank you! She definitely has a foreboding vibe to her. Deep and mysterious.

@voce africagems doesn’t give origin reports. (Maybe you could have him send it off before setting idk)

Since this was an $800 ruby and my first one and possibly not in its end iteration ring (isnt she begging to be surrounded by diamonds??? Though I do love the Stuller crown setting), I went ahead and bought her and had africa gems set her instead of sending her off.

I figured if I change her setting, I’ll send her off for a report.

she looks red to me in all lighting. I’m curious what color or tone or saturation you are seeing in the first post? I’m learning here. Thanks!

Oh and the pics are very close to what I see with my eye.

I know Africa Gems doesn't give independent lab reports or consistently list origins for stones, but it never hurts to ask, and after I asked, Marc told me my red spinel I bought from Africa Gems was Tanzanian origin, probably Mahenge. Because I'm such a stickler for knowing as much as possible about my stone before the purchase, I always ask for origin if the vendor doesn't list that info.

It could be a phone/monitor color balance issue, but in the first post on this thread, she appears red to me with some shadowing in the middle in the first three photos, and brown in the last three (photos 4 and 5 and the attachment). She appears red in all the photos shown in post #2.

My dream shade of red! Congrats!

Oh ok. I see what you mean but no, I don’t see brown in real life. I’m going to be staring at it now lol.

I will ask him if he knows the origin, great idea.

Great deep red but not too dark and looks gorgeous on your finger. Classic ruby!

Thanks! It was one of my better decisions.... to quell my burning ruby desire. Now, to save for a large one.

If you are seriously saving up for a large one, it did not quell your ruby desire!

Lovely color. Enjoy!

Beautiful red and perfect as a pinky ring!!

Haha so true.
It's surprising and amusing how lots of times the purchases to satisfy a craving actually stokes more desire for stones. ;-)

With the flash on in the evening in poor light with light rain outside:

My favorite of your pics so far. Have you started looking for the next setting yet or is she going to stay as a solitaire on your pinky for some time yet?

I like her small and dainty, so I think she will stay as is. I will have more rubies, but after 100 projects in line, lol

Hi whitewave,

sorry this is off topic - but can I ask you about your wedding bands?
I’m looking to have a ring remade into a wedding band and thought I would go for something flat and wide until I saw your rings.
can you link me to a thread about them or tell me about them please?
Thanks so much

Sure and thanks!

The solitaire band is a Stuller scroll band.

The sapphire and diamond one is from Brian Gavin. It’s called sapphire and diamond bezel https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/...nds/sapphire-and-diamond-bezel-platinum-5434p

The bottom one I grabbed from the sale section under jewelry at B2Cjewels.com for like $250 at the most. It’s not there any more.

Thankyou so much! They are really beautiful and don’t distract too much from your stunner - just compliment it! Xx
